Human Herpes Virus 6B
Drs. Li and Colleagues from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University in Chengdu Sichuan China report information in the latest ePub ahead of print issue of Epilepsy Research regarding their findings of the human herpes virus 6B and its relationship to epilepsy. Chinese investigators performed an analysis looking for human herpes virus 6A, 6B, HSV1, HSV2 in resected brain tissues from patients with mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy. The investigators found HHV6B DNA in hippocampal samples in 9 out of 32 patients with mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy and only one of 12 control samples. Moreover, there was an expression of a particular inflammatory marker which was up-regulated and seen in the cells of that area, which was scarred from the mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy positive for the virus.
This study is an important one because it helps to underscore the possible link between the human herpes virus HHV6 and the development of mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy. Moreover, this could help to inform clinical trials in evaluating anti-inflammatory or perhaps antiviral drugs for epilepsy. More information is needed in order to elucidate whether any connection between the virus and epilepsy exists , but this study is an important one because it helps to further expand our potential knowledge of herpes virus 6 and the development of seizures.
