Dr. Palencia from the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City, Mexico presents an intriguing small series of cases in which thalidomide was used as therapy for individuals with drug-resistant epilepsy. Patients were followed over one year while taking a total of 200 mg of thalidomide daily (Epilepsy Research (2010) 92:253-257). The researchers found a significant reduction in daily seizures. Given thalidomide's notoriously well-documented past along with its recent renaissance in its use for various cancer treatments, this is an interesting finding and suggestion of another potential avenue for drug development should the results be replicated elsewhere.
