October in Edinburgh! Ketogenic Diets 2nd Biannual Conference

By Eric Kossoff MD
Editor, Keto News

For all child neurologists, dietitians, scientists, and parents interested in the ketogenic diet, this October will be the second (ever) international symposium on Dietary Therapies to be held. Following up on the success of the first symposium, held in April 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona, myself and the other organizers decided to schedule a second meeting on the other side of the Atlantic – in Edinburgh, Scotland. Registration is still open and I encourage anyone who has not registered (or bought their plane tickets) to do so!

The meeting will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Edinburgh, right near many fun tourist sites, from October 5-8, 2010. It is jointly being coordinated by the parent support groups Matthew’s Friends (UK) and Charlie Foundation (USA). Other sponsors at this time include Nutricia, Special Products, and the Carson Harris Foundation. Information about the meeting can be found here.

Starting Tuesday October 5th, there will be a session with brief discussions of what is new all over the world in usage of the ketogenic diet. The next three days will be filled with unique sessions about dietary treatments in children, adults, for epilepsy (and other conditions), and including basic science. Speakers come from all over the world, but there is definitely a focus on speakers and topics relevant to England. Wednesday October 6th evening will see a poster session of approximately 50 of the newest research findings. Social events will be held both Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The full agenda can be found here. “Early bird” discounts for registration end on August 31st.

Perhaps most uniquely, Ms. Emma Williams, the founder and head of Matthew’s Friends, has organized a second conference on Saturday October 9th at the same hotel to immediately follow this meeting. This conference, entitled, “Family Conference for Dietary Treatments of Epilepsy and Glut-1 DS” is designed for parents and caregivers of children on dietary treatments. Many of the speakers from the scientific meeting will be staying the extra day to speak to parents. There is availability for children to be watched while their parents attend the meeting. In addition, that evening will be a traditional “Scottish ball” for all attendees. Registration is separate and information is listed here.

Hope to see you in beautiful Edinburgh in 2 months!
