Simple partial seizures rarely require first aid. Since consciousness is preserved, the person is almost always aware of the seizure and the surroundings. When care or assistance is needed, it should address the specific seizure symptoms. For example, children who experience visual hallucinations that obscure their vision should not play contact sports such as basketball during a seizure. If an adult has uncontrolled jerking (clonic movements) of the arm, sharp objects can be removed from the area near the arm. When simple partial seizures are known to progress to complex partial or secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures, the person should be quietly and cautiously moved to a safe environment.
