Incidence and Prevalence
The prevalence (the number of existing cases per year) is 0.26 per 1000. One out of ten children who have epilepsy onset in the first five years of life will be diagnosed with LGS. Overall, LGS makes up 2-5% of all childhood epilepsy. However, co-morbid developmental delay or intellectual impairment increases the percentage of LGS. In institutionalized adults with cognitive impairment, up to 17% have LGS. There is a slight predominance of males (prevalence rate of 0.1 per 1000 for boys, 0.02 per 1000 for girls). There is no racial difference in the prevalence of LGS. The average age at epilepsy onset is 26 to 28 months, with the vast majority before age 7 years.
