Reasons for Poor Medication Compliance

Reasons for Poor Medication Compliance

People have different beliefs about medical disorders and treatments. Your health beliefs are colored by your own experience and those of family and friends, as well as media information. Health beliefs are related to many factors, including many motivators:

  • Concern about one’s own health and sense of vulnerability
  • Willingness to seek and accept medical advice
  • Perceived value of the treatment
  • Perceived risk of adverse effects
  • Previous experience

What is the main issue?

Many people are concerned about having to take several types of medication and many tablets and capsules daily. Yet research has shown that when people remember to take a dose, you probably take all your medication together (for example, three different medications, six pills with breakfast). When you forget that dose, you probably miss all the pills. The conclusion is that the number of drugs and pills is not as important as the number of times a day doses must be remembered. Simple dose schedules are easiest to follow.

The main issue for most people is:

“How many times a day must I remember to take a dose?”

Ask your doctor to prescribe the fewest doses per day for each medication you take. Schedule multiple medications for the same dose time (when possible) to reduce the number of times a day you should take medicine.
