New to diagnosis and meds....

Hi Everyone!

I have been recently diagnosed at 32 years of age with Epilepsy in October of 2011 after having a tonic-clonic seizure at home.  All neurological testing was negative.  It is believed that I had a seizure in 1998 as I woke up in the floor of my dorm shower with no recollection of how I got there (no it was not alcohol related!!).  I also have had frequent vivid deja vus for as long as I can remember, and had been having staring spells leading up to the "big one".  My neurologist also seems to think that being on Wellbutrin at the time (the only medication I was on) may have lowered my seizure threshold.

I was initially placed on Vimpat, which was subsequently increased to two, 200mg pills twice per day as the deja vus would creep back.  They then became more frequent and vivid at which point my neurologist changed me to Keppra.  I am currently on two 500mg pills two times per day, while weaning off the Vimpat over the next few weeks.

I am having extreme word loss, memory issues, clumsiness, and today was completely at a loss for words at times.  I am a speech therapist in a school, and having these issues is not only very uncharacteristic for me, but unsettling as a teacher and professional.

Does anyone have the same experiences, or can you shed light on your challenges or side effects.  I am just now coming to terms with my loss of independence, ability to drive, and the not knowing if or when I will be back to "normal".  Thanks.

I had seizures on wellbutrin and cipro also . I have had the mental slowing on the meds also Topamax and keppra are bad but I heard other older meds are worse but I guess it depends on how you react to the medication . I was on a fast an high titration of keppra I was so drowsy unable to even read words as they wouldn't stick in my brain and had difficultly recognizing words quickly . Word finding was difficult and had trouble finishing a sentence with out being frustrated or lose a word and not being able to think of it like half the day later . It has been over a year and drowsiness is still a problem but the mental thing is getting better unless I'm super tired . I'm only up to 500mg in the am and 725mg in the evening plus I take tegretol 300mg am and pm . The tegretol never bothered me tired and mental wise but I shouldn't even be taking it as it makes my myoclonic jerks worse . So I guess its up to the persons body I guess how you will react .

Most of the literature states the newer drugs have lesser side effects such as drowsiness and mental slowing but I beg to differ . My doc said the major side effect or complaint of keppra is drowsiness and prob be the worse thing I would battle .

prince...

THanks, I do have the drowsiness as well, but sometimes I chalk that up to my two year old. Now that you mention it, I do feel TIRED TIRED at random times in the day.  You are explaining to me exactly how I feel with the word finding and the complete stupid feeling.....I hope hope hope the Keppra does better for me than the Vimpat.  The more I read around here the more I think I may have had some night issues as well, this is all so overwhelming.  Thank you very much for your post, this forum helps me feel not so alone.
