My neurgologist just switched me from tompiramate to lamictal 200mg and I am very worried about hair loss as a side effect. I lost about 1/4-1/2 of my hair on topiramte and I seem to get every rare side effect there is out there on medications for some reason. Has anyone else experienced excessive hair loss on low doses of lamictal?
Oh, I also just got dianosed with frontal lobe epilepsy(was in a bad carr accident when I was 6 and now its affecting me 21 years later)), so far I only have seizures at night/nocturnal. An interesting fact, I was having very small seizures, so small I wasnt even aware they were seizures at all... and because I went on tompiramate for migraines, it changed something in my body/brain and caused me to have full blown seizures, or so my neurogist claims.
I have simple partial/complex partial/autonomic seizures.
Thanks
Julie

Hey Julie,
I have been on both Topamax and Lamictal and did notice a significant amount of hair loss from Lamictal. However, my adjustment to life with seizures and a new baby and working full time could have been contributing factors. I remember one day when a student said, "Mrs. Moran, your hair is all over the table." I was devastated. It was falling off in the shower. I was finding them all over my clothes and the floor. Fortunately, I had thick curly hair so it was less noticeable. I got so frustrated that I marched into one of those cheap haircut places and just told them to give me a bob as tears fell from my eyes. The poor hairdresser was just staring at me. I felt so much better because it was less traumatic for me as they fell out. And then one day, I noticed that the hair loss just stopped and my hair started growing back. The hair growing back was initially like baby hair and wispy. I am hoping it was due to my fluctuating hormones from having a baby, but I am not convinced. My friend who is a nurse suggested that any time you introduce a new substance into your body you are going to notice some reaction. I hope your hair loss is temporary and minimal. As if losing our minds aren't enough- we have to lose our hair too. Vanity vs. Sanity Take your pick. Best of luck to you. If it is any consolation, my hair is now better than ever but everybody is different.
I'm losing my hair, I've been on Lamictal for years and it's finally catching up with me in a big way. Whenever I take a shower, it's all over the bottom of the tub. I'd like to switch back to Dilantin because of it but my Dr doesn't want me to change meds.
Hi, I have lost so much hair. I've been on lamictal for so many years I can't pinpoint how long. I am now taking 300 mg a day. When I blow dry my hair each time it seems like less is on the brush. I'm trying all sorts of vitamins and even an herbal blend from my acupuncturist. I saw some improvement but not nearly enough obviously. I have about 1/5 of the hair I used to have. How much are you taking?
