Hello! I just found out that I am about 5 wks pregnant. I am looking for people to talk to, give me advice, share stories, or just chat. I still haven't told my side of the family, though by boyfriend's family all know. My boyfriend is 21 and I am 20. We are both coming up on our senior year in college, have a good/steady jobs, and are rennovating a house. But, this was unplanned. I am feeling scared but happy. My boyfriend feels the same way. He is so wonderful but we are very concerned about my seizures (JME for 8 years). Since we will both keep our jobs and continue school we are worried about an increase in seizures. What should I know about controlling my seizures during pregnancy, passing epilepsy on to my baby, and hurting my baby because of a seizure? I have been off seizure meds for about seven months now (the last was depakote), will the medicine still hurt my baby? If you have any good links please post them! I am dying to have answers! Thanks!

In my opinion, a seizure can hurt your baby worse than the medication. I took Dilantin with both my children, they are grown now and there were no residual affects from the medication. They are thriving productive people. Having said that. My second child was a full term stillborn, I took my medication with him also, but had a tonic clonic seizure with him, and he must have died instantly from lack of oxygen. My disorder is a constant reminder of the loss. I pass this on not to scare women, but to reveal the fact that hormones play a big role with this disorder. Your doctor may not share this with you, even if you ask. Do not have a (total) hysterectomy, unless it is absolutely necessary. The body can not facilitate the shock of your hormones dropping to the basement. What was supposed to be a routine procedure was a shock to my body when I went into multiple tonic clonic seizures. A bad headache was my alarm, the reason I survived is I was at the hospital emergency waiting room. This is a tough subject when we are responsible for giving life to another human being, but necessary. No one in my family has had seizures, including my children. You main concern is having a healthy baby, so concentrate on what triggers to avoid, including presciption drugs, over the counter, herbs, supplements, and any foods. Your goal is no seizures while pregnant. Try to be relaxed as possible, think Yoga. Best of luck to you.

Also, I hope at this point you have contacted your neurologist and your OB-Gyn to monitor things during your pregnancy. If you haven't as yet, contact them as soon as possible.
