Police Officer Discharged Regarding Epilepsy

Hello Everyone. I wrote a few years ago regarding my issues and was looking for suggestions and help. I had been a Police Officer for about 16 years and worked for a large department for 10 and then went to a smaller department for my last six. I was really enjoying life and helping the people who had been harmed in the major felony crime unit. A few days before, I spoke to a stabbing victim in the ICU and next thing I remember was a twitching in my neck at home on my way to work and just before leaving, evidently had a seizure in front of my wife and woke up in hospital. I guess I had 2-3 more seizures while enroute in ambulance and then multiple in hospital. 6 day later and a grand mal Dr's decide there not sure what is wrong and transfer me to the trauma hospital (same ICU as above) where they had a MRI and a clot in brain, bleeding, and a mild stroke. 2 months later released and thank God for allowing me to live. Wife and family state big boss and others at hospital tell wife and family don't worry we will take care of me after and all is good.

Received release to work light duty in office for 4,6,8 hr days over weeks and need supervision. Received certified(in mail) letter from department attorney and if I could not return in the weeks I had of leave time to full police duty I would be discharged. I was shocked, was the union president and union attorney could not help. Nothing in contract to provide light duty. I was medically discharged. I remained persistant, got better every day and Dr's were amazed. Nuero Dr takes me off "Dilantin" slowly to show no seizure problem. Soon after, seizure and unconcious in hospital. (9 mo's after Orig). Dr says take Dilantin and weeks later changes drug and slowly off Dilantin. Soon after....another seizure and for 1st time stay awake. (that was worse than going out). Neuro says back on Dilantin and 2.5 years without a seizure. Head boss tells me they are concerned about seizure and no hire back. No witness, No Taped recording. I was just reaching out to anyone in LE or Atty type who has thoughts. To all, it is good to be alive and live well and wish you well.

I can no longer hold a job.  My son can't even stay home with me during the day.  I have to send him to daycare.  A stay-at-home mom who sends her kid to daycare.  I feel like a failure.  I just had 2 grand mals last night.  I'm hoping to go on disability.

Worked only 3 yrs.  and was discharged due to Epilepsy, I was in my 20's.  I went into another field of work.  They did not know the cause of my seizures and from your explanation it seems your seizures were caused by a clot in the brain, that has resolved.

I worked in a small Dept. and they were very kind but when the seizures occured while booking a prisoner it was wise for me to leave.  In your case I would think your union would represent you or Neurologist or Epilepsy Society might know of someone that might help you.  You have a lot of experience behind you.

I worked 15 years in medical field and had no problems.  I hope you are able to find  someone to represent you, especially if you are in good health!

Take care,

Toni

Thanks for the thoughts; I kinda already did all that and was looking outside the box, but don't know what that is out there.
