hey guys...I have a quastion..I have been on Dilantin(200mg a day) since last five years, never had a sz in
between until i stopped taking it in march 09 and had a sz immediately.
after that it was followed by a couple of more sz's until i raised the
daily dosage to 300mg of dilantin. I havent had a sz after that. My
Doctor advised me to switch to Topamax, according to him it has less
side effects compared to dilantin. I was doing fine until nov 08 with
dilantin 200mg/day. since nov08 a lot of side effects have been
troubling me from doing regular stuff. Cant remeber the words i want
to say, enzity, vision and a lot more. do u think it is advisable to
switch to topamax in this situation? since it appears that dilantin is
controling the sz's. also do u guys know any medicines/herbs/vitamin
that can help to get rid of all these side effects and live a normal
life with seizure medicine?
thanks
best regards

I was also seizure free for several years while taking dilantin, then my insurance made me switch drs. The new dr. told me that dilantin was very bad for me and that I should switch medications which was very frustrating because I didn't even want to change drs and now he wanted me on a new medication when I wasn't having any seizures. He put me on topamax and I hate it, I seem to have memory loss with this one and stuttering occasionally. My hand also go numb but that hasn't happened for a while. Then sometimes I will forget to take it (not very often) but if I do I have a seizure. I have grand mal seizures that last a long time and I usually bite my tongue pretty bad, so my husband will take me to the emergency room and they always pump me full of dilantin because thats what they have in an iv I guess. Then I'll go back to the dr and he'll say I need to taper back off the dilantin. I had a really bad seizure in febuary and they put me on the dilantin again and my dr was taking back off of it and then the last time I saw him I was taking my regular dose of topamax and 400mg a day of dilantin and I figured he would lower the dilantin again. He just asked me if I had had any more seizures since the last one and I told him no. So he said to keep taking the dilantin. I should have said something to him then but alls I was thinking was he must be an idiot now I'm going to be right back to where I started from. What was the point of switching in the first place. Except now I'm on two medications instead of one. I looked up the side effects of topamax online and it has a long list including suicidal thoughts which I have not had thank goodness. I know with dilantin my gums bled when I brushed my teeth, that's the only thing that got me to switch was that the dr said something about dilantin causing thin blood and a couple of other things I can't remember, but I think the next time I see him I am going to tell him I don't want to be on topamax anymore.
My Dr. recently perscribed Trileptal after I had my first G-Mal. Have been experiencing small seizures for four years now due to a head injury. The Trileptal seems to have fewer side effects than Topamax and Lyrica, the two other AED's I have taken previously. It has also, almost stopped the Aura's. It must be new on the market because know one else seems to have heard of it. I have fewer memory issues and I am starting to feel like my old self again. I know that everyone has a different experience but it's worth a try. Good Luck! Not too sure what any Dr's really know or if they know any more than we do, yet still we, the patients, are at their mercy. Good Luck to us all!!!!!
Not all but some of the new DR's get paid for promoting medications. So without testing to see if this is the right med for a person they'll try and switch you over so they can make a profit, even if what your taking has your seizures under control.
Don't get me wrong, there are still good concerned DR's out there, but they're fading away. This is one reason why I lost my trust in the medical field some time ago
Have you notice how prescipted drugs are being promoted on TV lately?
I was diagnosed with epilepsy(grand-mal) 48 years ago. My seizures have been controled for close to 2 decades now with Dilantin alone.
I found that most side effects occur when other medications are taken along with dilantin.
I use to take(along with dilantin) Phenobarbital and Mysoline and with that I walked, talked and looked like some drug addict. I decided to ween myself off of these 2 meds and as these 2 drugs depleted from my system so did all of the side effects.
