Can you will away a seizure?

Hi all,

I have been diagnosed with epilepsy (gran mal) since I was 16, I am now 30.  I am not sure when this sensation began but over the last 2 years I have been feeling the "on-set" of what could be a seizure, but then I never have one.  The symptoms for all my seizures are always the same: starts with my eyes, a locked stare that turns everything blurry, then both eyes begin to flicker and I usually have enough time to lay myself down for the seizure.

In the case where I do not have a seizure, I get caught in a stare and things blur (like a camera out of focus), but in recognizing the feeling I begin breathing deeply and eventually pull myself out of the 'spell', then move about to avoid getting locked down in the sensation again.  This episode lasts under a minute and I am conscious, I can hear, feel, think...nothing is altered but my sight.  A doctor once told me "you can't will away a seizure" but these episodes-which occur way more than the actual epileptic seizures-really make me wonder. Can anyone relate to this or direct me to more information regarding my experience?  Thanks so much in advance.

I have about the same issues. I can think & hear during the episodes. I can't see anything but black and I can't move or speak. I don't know why or what triggers these. (I can shop in some store because of them, I was told it could be the lighting)  Some are worse than others as you've said. I normally get a quick pain in my head that warns me when a bad 1 is about to happen. I do control them better now that I'm older. I am 37 but can remember having them around age 3. When I was younger my arms would trimmer, now I can do it in front of someone & they think I'm in La-La Land. I don't believe any have ever lasted very long but after a bad 1 sometimes I feel tired or drained. Lots of time I can feel pressure where the pain in my head was for a short while afterwards. I wish you luck

Hello, I'm only a student who is currently studying seizures and epilepsy so I'm not a medical professional or anything, but it seems to me like what is occuring is a simple partial seizure which is basically a "seizure aura". It can progress into a complex partial seizure and then into a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure as neuronal hyperactivity spreads throughout the brain, but this is not always the case as the hyperactivity may remain localized in one portion of the brain such as the temporal lobes or hippocampi.

A simple partial seizure is a seizure that can affect movement, emotion, and sensations, however, the person having the seizure will still retain consciousness.

Thanks 'trying...' that is helpful information and an option I can look into more. Some others have told me they think its anxiety. I know anxiety is very common amongst epileptics and I am certain that I too suffer from anxiety, particulary days after a seizure, but the episodes I decribed in this post seem stronger than an anxiety attack (although I really don't know much about anxiety attacks).

Or..maybe the two are related? From your studies, have you found that anxiety can trigger epileptic tendencies or seizures? I wonder if my anxiety may trigger a seizure aura---or this sensation I feel, or vise versa?
