weight gain with neurontin or trileptal

In the last month since coming off of topamax and keppra and on to Neurontin and Trileptal I seem to have gained about 7 lbs... I am 5'7 and normaly weigh about 135 lbs, since being diagnosed I have gained aout 22lbs all together!! However I was at 144 lbs and not gaining or loseing weight while on Topamax and Keppra.

I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar problems, with weigh gain and AED's. Could it be coming off of topamax has suddenly spiked my hunger? Or is it the drugs themselves. I know that exsercising and eating well might help. However I do try to eat well, and it is hard for me to muster the energy to work out, do to lack of sleep caused by sleep seizures...your advice and kind words are appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Lauren, I have to be honest here and say that my weight gain over the past 27 years of E medication is down to my love of food!  No doubt about it I could eat foe Scotland, the UK and probably Europe if it was a contest.

The thing is, untill I hit 40 I never really put on much weight.  I was about 98 lbs entering high school, about 120 -140 lbs age 16 when this all started for the last 3 years have been about 154.  I know it's not a big amount compared to some folk, but I just wish my stomach didn't look like I was 7 months into a pregnancy! lol!

Guess I need to work on that 6 pack!  If you are ever over here you can  try some Scottish fare - Haggis/fish suppers/steak pie - just make sure you wear the pants with the elastic waist! lol!

Hi Lauren,

I'm Amanda, been having seiz. since I was 11 (now 28). I have been on neurontin and am currently on Trileptol, Lamictal, Zonegran, and am in a drug study.  I can say that most AED's can cause weight to change, and neurontin did cause me to gain some weight when I first started it but when I had ajusted to it I leveled out.  I stopped the neurontin when I started the trileptol and it didn't cause me to gain weight.

I understand not having the energy to get to exercising, I try to fit a walk aroud the block everyother day.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Lauren,

I'm 29 in May but have had epilepsy since I was 11.  I've been on many AED's and can tell you that yes weight gain is a side effect but some of them can cause weight loss. I'm not the skinniest person but hey... if I can be on a AED that makes me loose weight .. heck thats all good :) Keep your chin up babe... I've been on so many drugs and concoctions over the last 17 years that I've come to the conclusion that as long as you can find some way to exercise (even if it's walking or something simple like that) and eat right and keep your health in check that the weight will eventually go if the meds are right :)

I'm always up for a chat... message me thru the website..

I am 47 and have been haveing tonic clonic seizures since I was 18 and have been on to many diffrent pills to count. I now take 390mg dilantin at night with 300 mg neurontin. and 100mg dlantin and aouther 300mg neurontin in the morning and anouther 300mg neurontin at lunch. The key was to take the large dose at night so all the nasty side affects happen when I am asleep and the dilantin does help me sleep.I dont know if this helps but takeing the large dose at night helped me and the neurontin seems to have no effects.
