Hi I (we) are new here!
My daughter Beatrice is almost 10 months old and has now been diagnosed as having a seizure disorder. Actualy I think she had a diagnosis 2 months ago but they kind of avoided telling us? In August (right before the olympics started) she had 3 Gran Mal seizures (all same day) we spent 3 days in the PICU on Keppra and had every test they could think of done. (eeg before they started meds, MRI, CT scan, spinal tap, urin culture, blood cultures and other blood testing) After all was said and done they called it "seizures of unknown origin" and sent us on our way to a pediatric neurologist. He was kind of gruff about the whole thing, wanted her on meds and such. But the hospital had taken her off the keppra and told us a "wait and see" approch would best serve her to see if this was an "isolated incident". 2 months went by and we were visiting family when I looked down ad she was seizing again. I administerd her diazapam gel rectaly and it took longer then 2 minutes to work so as instructed we called 911. Before the paramedics arrived she did stop. They took us by ambulence to the local ER. The contacted our neurologist who was 2+ hours away back in Baltimore and he started her on Keppra and we go back to see him next week.
I saw her chart at the hospital, from the moment we walked in they had put seizure disorder on her chart. Why didn't I know to say she had a seizure disorder? Why arn't they calling it epilepsy? Whats the diffrence?
We are feeling very overwhelmed. My parents witnessed the seizure this week and are so confused. My mom didn't understand why she wasn't thrashing around more, so I looked up the description of diffrent seizures on line and she had all the signs of a Grand Mal, but I had to explain to my mom that this is not TV so it's probably not going to look so dramatic. We feel like we will never be able to leave the kids again. Who would possibly take on our kids (our son has asthma and both kids have reflux, DS is 2) when the risk of one of them having a problem is so high? Now I carry a nebulizer and anti sezure meds everywhere we go. As if being a mom of 2 in diapers doesn't make you feel like a pack mule allredy!
Thanks for listening! I guess I am off to explore the forum and more of the web site.
