Metformin and Epilepsy

I have PCOS. My doc is looking at putting me on Metformin for it. I know it is not a birth control med, but when I saw my GYN before, she told me that birth control can put one more at risk for seizures. Do you know if Metformin can put one at risk? I think I'd rather deal with my PCOS by itself if Metformin puts me more at risk. I finally got my seizures under control, and I'd like to keep it that way! Any help will be great! Thanks!

I also have PCOS and epilepsy, and the first thing that I tried for help was birth control.  My doctor actually said it should decrease my seizures, as I had lots around time for my period and it has.  Its called Seasonique, if you wanted to ask about that.  However, my gyn also said that if Seasonique didn't work Metformin would be the next step!

I was diagnosed with PCOS six months before my first grand mal seizure.  I have been on Metformin for a year.  After my seizure, my neurologist put me on an anti-seizure med.  I have no problem with Metformin and the seizure med.  I take both two times a day (at the same time) and have never had any difficulties.  If you plan to get pregnant, however, I would consult a doctor.  In my case, Metformin has never had any affect on my seizure med.  I would say it's safe.  Hope this helps!

Thanks again! The only thing I'm not looking forward to about metformin in the initial side effects. My father took it for his diabetes at one point and it made him real sick for the first few weeks. Now he is doing ok. I'm just not looking forward to it. But I guess I will have to go on in life and deal with it for a while (if the med even makes me sick).  =(   Thanks again for the response.

Thanks! I hope it does help me. I was just a little scared at first because I heard that the birth control pills can increase the risk of seizures. I hope to get PCOS straightened out. It is really starting to aggrivate me. Thanks again!
