I haven't gotten on here in way to long, probably because everything seemed to be going fine. Kaitlyn hadn't been having seizures for some time and then all of the sudden about 2 weeks ago she had one while sleeping (a normal one for her) and afterwards she was cranky and tired. Then this past weekend she was at her Aunts house for a sleep over where apparently she had two episodes that I am not sure if they were seizures or not.
She was heading outside and just stopped in her tracks, staring at the tree saying that there was a man behind it, started to scream and then stopped talking and responding. She was fine a few minutes afterwards. Later that evening she did it again.
Does anyone know if that's a possible seizure?? She's had other times when she's seen things that no one else can see. She has also heard things that no one else hears.
Then on Tuesday her school called me and told me that they did an evaluation for speech and delays. Apparently she is delayed with speech and it appears as though she has lost some of her speech skills. When they did her first evaluation she was right on target, no red flags and now she has some major markers of problems. We used to be able to understand about 90% of what she said and now we are at about 25% of the time we can understand it. She hasn't mastered some basic skills that she should be able to do like colors, understanding action words (talking, galloping, running, eating, etc), knowing what objects are for (what a pencil is for, what a chair is for, etc).
Has anyone dealt with any of this??
Thanks!
Emily

We are still trying to figure things out, but it looks on EEG like my daughter is having seizures in the part of the brain that controls speech. She goes through phases of talking well to not talking. She also sometimes slurs her words. She is mildly autistic with language delays already, but the seizures have made this worse. Thankfully, it seems so far to be temporary, and she usually starts talking normally (for her) with in a day or so.
Has she been to a pediatric neurologist? If not, I would have her evaluated for that first.
Hello - my 14 yr old will have the stopping in her tracks moments as well - just this week, when going into her 1st period class, she stopped in her tracks and "wandered off", heading into the wrong classroom. I've seen this happen in her before as well - almost like a record that's skipped a beat..and has reported "dream like" visions or things that aren't there when having them.
Is your daughter aware this is happening when it is? Our neurologist has mentioned that this is a sort of a low-register absence seizure but without the repetitive motions.
As for the delays - it's possible that these are part of the seizures - or, has anyone checked Kaitlyn for Auditory Processing Disorder? I'm not an expert on it, but it's along the same lines as some seizure neurological functions but it causes a mixture of words (almost like an auditory dyslexia of sorts) that may cause delays in speech and processing.
Good luck!
