I'm just starting zonegran trying to taper off Keppra. Does anyone have any experience or advice about this med? I'm pretty scared to try something new AGAIN!

i started taking Zonegran when i got diagosned with E. I lost a lot of weight, had memory problems, confusion, and always slept, almost all day. those all lasted about 5 months or so.
overall, its been working well for me. and the seizures are better.
good luck.
Gabi.
I take Keppra, Zonegran, and a test drug. I have taken Keppra twice and Zonegran twice. The first time I took Zonegran I had no reaction. I have had sz disorder since my teens.
I noted my appetite changed for the better I did not eat so much. I was able to curb my appetite better. If I wanted to get an apple I would not go straight for a sugar product! Like ice cream, or cookie or even potatoe chips.... I have teenagers in the house and a husband that also loves those products!
My partials are fewer and not so intense. I have had 2 surgeries and on a VNS. I have been on all medications.
Hi,
I've been on Zonegran since 2003. I'm also on Lamictal, trileptal, have a VNS, and just started a new drug trial last week.
ANYWAY, I'm on zonegran and I've had fairly good results from it. It has helped me with seizure controll. The biggest side effects that I have had to deal with have been the weight loss, nausia, and memory issues (but trileptol and Lamictal dont help that).
I'm very very sensitive to side effects of medications, kinda sucks. I've had to regulate my diet to keep my weight at a steady 120. My Neuro Doc (who I completely trust) tells me that my drastic weight loss is not the norm. The nausia seemed to decline after the first 7 months, it wasn't terrible.
For me Zonegran has helped a great deal and a think that the benifits have outweighed the side effects. I havent had the extreem sleepiness or moodiness/ depression that I've delt with in other ddrugs.
Since I'm now at a good med level for me the side effects have subsided to being manageable or un noticeable.
I hope i've been a help to you.
Good luck to you I hope you find a solution to get your seizures under controll, I'm around if you need anything else. :)

I just started the transition from Keppra (3000 mg/day) to zonisamide (generic Zonegran) a few days ago. I am hopeful that this will work. The Keppra was not controlling the simple partial seizures. So far, I am feeling ok but still having the simple partials. I want to give it a little longer before I talk to my neurologist. I would also love to hear anyone else's experience with this. Take care!
My son is currently on tegretol and zonegran (new drug added) while being weaned off keppra. He is reducing keppra by 250 mg. a week. He is having terrible rages, aggression and mood swings. Does anyone know if this can be attributed to the weaning of the keppra?
