New - Topamax and suicide thoughts
|
|
My co-pay is very expensive on my prescriptions. Plus, I am building up on my full dosage. My doctor, wrote two different prescriptions this last visit. I am anxiously watching and waiting for a generic version of generic Topamax. Has anyone read or heard any updates? I know the patent was to expire in August but could be delayed and held up in court.
Thanks and God bless!

The generic for Topamax will be (or is supposed to be) out in March of 2009. I just got put on it and have no insurance. I was approved for Medicaid, but they don't want to cover it, either. Instead Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical is helping me with either free medication or "deeply discounted" medication. They are partnered with Johnson and Johnson. I will do anything not to have to go back on generic Depakote (Valproic Acid) again, and feel like trash all the time.
I don't know if this would help, but the company that makes Topamax participates in a program that gives Topamax free to those who cannot afford it when it is being used for epilepsy. Check out this page. Trust me, this isn't a "welfare' type program, and they will even ask if you have insurance (I think in that instance, they will charge you insurance their part, and waives the rest - but don't quote me on that!) The link is

Then click on the topic "TogetherRX". It will tell you about the program. Hope this helps~ (Hey, I am ALWAYS looking for a way to save a nickel.... save a nickel, and pretty soon, it will be enough to buy that special thing you want!)
Yes, thanks. The TogetherRX program is just a drug discount program and brought the Topamax cost down to about $170 from over $200.
I actually found a independent discount drug plan that I could join that beat the price of TogetherRX though, so I use that to pay for Topamax when my Neurologist's office can't give me samples.
Thanks for the link though...maybe it can help other folks!

That is certainly good news that a generic form will be available, hopefully soon. My co-pay for 200mg monthly is $75 thru Cigna. Without insurance I was paying $525! It was crazy!!!!!!! Its the only drug that works for me and I could never get samples from my doctor. At least you spread a little sunshine to my checkbook knowing that in the future the costs will be lowered. Thanks so much for this info. Peace! Tina
Well, I don't have any specific information on the availability of Generic Topamax, but when I called my Neurologist's office here in the Seattle area for my monthly supply of free Samples (since I don't have Insurance and as we know Topamax is $170 a month without Insurance) I was told that the Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Rep was no longer giving them Samples because Topamax was going Generic! :o
I called my Pharmacist and she said that she didn't have information on when Topiramate was becoming available, but she very rarely knows until it just shows up in the boxes when she's unpacking it. She was surprised to hear what I told her and said she'll tell her other customers who are on the drug that it's coming soon in Generic!
How strange is it that that Ortho-McNeil Pharma Rep is just giving up and no longer marketing it!? That to me sure sounds like Topiramate is coming very soon, doesn't it?
i hadnt heard anything about the patent on topamax being up in august... ohhh, i hope thats true because i thought drugs had a 17 yr patent and i didnt think that top had been out that long.
Actually I did more research their patent expires in September. A drug company named Mylan wants to manufacture a generic and has been approved by the FDA to do so but can't because of the patent that Topamax still holds until September. They went to court against Topamax but the judge ruled in favor of Topamax. Mylan's arguement was inequitable conduct, obviousness and non-ebablement arguments. I rejoice knowing that their is hope in the future and that their is generic Topamax in the near future for us. Hang in there!
