Well, it's official...I've been diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. So far, I've only had simple partial seizures. I get this strong deju vu and detached feeling, I can hear everything going on around me, and can move normally, but can only speak single words. These seizures last for maybe 20 or 30 seconds, then I feel 'normal'. The doctor wants to put me on Depakote. My GP says she thinks I'm bipolar, and that Depakote would be a treatment for that also. I get these mood swings, from depression to anger to numbness, sometimes all within the course of one day.
I've researched this online, and have found some studies that suggest that bipolar and epilepsy could be related conditions, and that bipolar could even actually be a form of epilepsy. Has anyone else had similar experiences or found any similar information to share?
Thanks
Deb

When I was 8 years old (early 1980s) I was given a course of
Electroencephalography (EEG) in the hope that it might explain why I
sometimes seemed to just "zone out of the world" in brief spells of no
more than 30 secs or so. My parents and friends knew about this and
noticed it but it was completely harmless in normal life at the time.
25
years later I now understand that I suffered from simple partial
seizures (SPS) characteristic of a mild form of temporal lobe epilepsy
(TLE). In fact from what I am told by multiple sources I still do, even
though I believed I had ceased to suffer from these attacks in my late
teens.
However I also know that from my late teens, my
previously harmless episodes became something else. Bipolar II
disorder. I even suffered a very serious depressive episode in 1994
that led me to being hospitalised. I don't mind talking about this now
15 years later even though I know bipolar disorder in its milder form
will be with me for my entire adult life.
But I do not believe
that the link between TLE and bipolar disorder has been made widely
known. Medical science is unwilling to make a solid claim of the link
between the two due to the fact that so little can be proven about the
specifics of these two illnesses and how they may inter-relate. But
there is much clinical evidence that they do and I suspect there are
many people out there who live with bipolar disorder without
understanding what its possible origin might be.

I was diagnosed with bipolar years before I ever had my first seizure, no cat scans were ever taken at the time to see if anything else was going on that I should be concerned with and was never placed on any meds. My Epilepsy started years after that and an MRI found that I have a cyst on my brain. I get mood swings, depression, anger, you name it. I bounce from mood to mood all the time.
I also have both TLE and Bipolar Type II. In fact, it was my therapist that suggested that I be checked out by a neurologist. It is hard to puzzle out what symptoms are TLE and Which are from the bipolar. I started taking Tegretol XR for the bipolar (it works great for me), and my neurologist left me on it because it works for TLE also. My neurologist thinks that some of my psychiatric symptoms over the years may have been TLE. My therapist agrees, but still thinks I am bipolar also. I figure "same dog, new name" and as long as the tegretol works, I don't worry about which disorder causes what. But I do wonder if over the years, I could have avoided alot of suffering if the drs knew I had TLE
Good luck, and hope the new meds work well
Wowser!!! My girl with bipolar, my boy with epilepsy makes for some real investigation time.
thanks for the alert!
I have bipolar as well as epliepsy. I can tell you it is a rollercoaster of a ride. You will have to do the try and test the meds to see if they will work. I have experienced what has worked for the seizures does not work for my bipolar. I believe they are linked together, just for the reason my bipolar spun out of control after I had 3 grand mals. I am currently trying to experiment myself. Good Luck.
Thanks very much for your input, Marchetti...I wish you the best of luck as well. Sounds like you've got more experience in this area than I do, and I appreciate your comments.
One thing I'm learning quickly is that the doctors (at least the doctors I've been dealing with) don't really seem to have much concrete info regarding either epilepsy or bipolar...seems like it's up to us to be as informed as possible. My GP had no clue what I was talking about when I first tried to explain the 'episodes' I was experiencing. Once I got home, it took me less than 5 minutes online to figure out they were probably simple partial seizures... my symptoms fit the descriptions I found perfectly.
I hope the depakote does what the doc thinks it will do...
Thanks again.
I was diagnosed as having childhood absence epilepsy syndrome as a child. a Neurologist claimed that I would out grow it. When I became pregnant with my twins I was removed from depakote. They did an eeg and claimed that no seizure activity was detected. I have been having horrible mood swings and off and on rages and have had 2 different doctors tell me that I need to see a shrink, so that I guess can be officially diagnosed with it. I think that I need to see a neurologist!! I'm glad to hear of some one else that has similar issues.
Any suggestions???

I also have temporal lobe epilepsy and am bipolar. I take depakote and tegretol, both also used for the treatment of bipolar and use ativan as needed. I am lucky in that the same meds that treat my epilepsy also treat the bipolar and the as needed medicine, the ativan, is also used for both conditions.
The combination work really well on the bipolar. I have breakthrough moods and depression but they are mild compared to what they were before being put on this combo.

Being that TLE and Bipolar have alot of the same symptoms, the ride isn't fun. I hope the Depakote works well for you and makes the ride alot smoother. Take care!

Thank you so much for the info, Spiz!
It's so helpful to know I'm not the only one dealing with these things! I haven't had time to check out the links you sent yet, but can't wait to see what's there!
