Long term tegretol usage, pregnancy

I've been on tegretol for 13 years (I'm 27) and was wondering if any other women have been on it for a long time and what their decision was in terms of dosage, medication changes for pregnancy.  I'm not pregnant, don't plan to be any time soon, but it worries me that I've been on tegretol so long.  My doc has mentioned possibly switching to Kepra someday when I start to think about kids, has anyone else been advised to do that?

I had been on Tegretol since I was 13.  I turned 28 when my new doc took me off of it.  I had 4 children while taking the tegretol and they are all healthy little girls.  I researched Keppra and Pregnancy.  I dont know why your doctor would want to change you to that if you decide to get pregnant!  It is a Class C drug!  FDA says it could do harm on a fetus.  No studies have been done on humans.  But it did cause harm on babies of animals.

I had my first child while on Tegretol.  I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 3 months, so doctor said if there was going to be damage, it had already been done.  My daughter is 8 years old and not a thing wrong with her.  I just found out I was pregnant again and my ob took me off the tegretol immediately.  My neurologist has changed me to Keppra.  I am having a hard time staying awake and I get dizzy easily.

I am 42 and my thoughts are that I have my age going against the baby like it is.  No need to add the Tegretol to it.  I have been seizure free since 1992 and my doctor still won't take me completely off any medication.

I think if I was younger, I wouldn't have worried as much about staying on the Tegretol.

Hi,

I started taking Tegretol/carbamazepine in 1989 at the age of 13.  I have had two healthy children, and I stayed on Tegretol throughout both pregnancies.  My first child was born prematurely, at 35 1/2 weeks, which may or may not have been due to my Tegretol use.  She was 4lbs 15 oz, but healthy and came home two days later like a full term baby.  My second child was born at 38 weeks and was over 7 lbs.  My OB checked my Tegretol levels more often during my pregnancies in case the dosage needed to be adjusted.  Both times I was able to stay on my regular dose with no adjustments (and I gained 50 pounds with each pregnancy).  My OB always told me that she has had several patients on Tegretol during pregnancy with no problems.  I know that clinically it dose pose a higher rate of birth defects, however, so there is definitely cause to be careful and try to be on the lowest dosage necessary.

I hope that info helps put your mind at ease!

I had 2 children while on Tegretol.  I was a test patient in the 70's for the drug.  Both of my children are healthy and are teenagers.  I, now have problems w/ clotting and they said it is from the Tegretol and my bone density is weak caused by being on it for 30 years.  I am now on Keppra and it works fine for me.  I had no ill affects from the change over.  It probably is a good idea!  I have a few broken bones, if I knew the medication in time would cause osteoporosis.   I have broken a total of 5 bones and not everytime while I was seizing.
