Want a baby, TERRIFIED of what might happen

I'm not sure I really belong here but this was the only website I could find that people seemed friendly and gave lots of feed back and advice.  I do not have epilepsy but I am on lamictal to treat bipolar.  My doctor has advised me to stay on it but I'm still considering getting off.  I'm interested to hear anyone's thoughts or experiences, good or bad, that have some idea of what goes on here.  My fiance and I will be married in 6 weeks and are very anxious to start a family but the very thought of it makes me cry.  PLEASE HELP!

I have epilepsy and have had since 12, I found out I was pregnant when I was 3 months along I stayed at the same dose of Dilantin & phenobarbital.14 months after my 1st son was born I had my 2nd son They are now 21 & 22 and are so active! As far as any problems health wise they have never had any problems. I would say talk to your dr. I was told after the fact that my meds didn't work with my birth control pills (they didn't tell me about it as I was 3 months along & they didn't want me to stress). I had always wanted to have 2 boys & that's what I had (How Blessed) we were! I did have surgery so no more surprises! Talk to your Dr about everything don't take chances you think are safe only to learn they weren't (remember no question is stupid unless not asked)! I just joined this sight but have found it very informative.

Well, I'll go out on a limb and say what is totally out of vogue right now, but I would strongly suggest weening off of it slowly, under a doctor's supervision. Before everybody faults my comment, let me tell you my sister is bipolar and I have suffered from anxiety in the past (I also have epilepsy). Both my sister and I were on meds while pregnant (she was not on meds during her first trimester). All our children turned out pretty well, but here daughter was slower to talk then all her cousins, and my boys have had some attention/hyperactivity problems, although they are all quite bright. But the thing is, anything that comes up, you may question if your decision to stay on the meds caused this. I can really spin out on this, and so can my sister, even though what we've encountered pales in comparison to others. Yes, Lamictol is one of the safer drugs, but it is also one of the newest drugs. The longterm effects on behavior and cognition are just beginning to be studied. Also, FYI, the physical birth defects are most likely during the first trimester of pregnancy, but brain development is most affected during the last trimester. If you're unstable now, how will you be if you have a child with learning disablities? Let me jjust say it's emotionally draining.  I say, if you can possibly go off it for 9 months, do it. Also, you should get several other medical opinions on this. The more research now, the better. And one more thing, if you have the time, you might want to be married for a couple years first, before having a baby. Yes, babies are devine, but they also put alot of mental stress on even the most hardy of us. You might want to enjoy these early days of marriage.

Well pregnacy is enough to scare anyone into a nunery. Look
yer drug up on rxlist.com. You aren't knocked up yet so why
worry. You can't control any of it so deal with the stuff you can
control and forget the rest or if you are a god believer
then ask him to take your worries away.

Welcome
to the epilepsy forum it's full of very nice folks who will help
you. We help everyone epileptic or not.

Cobalt,

The best thing is to talk with your doctor, talk about how you feel, what it is you are afraid of, whether it's the meds and being pregnant or being bipolar and pregnant.  Going off your meds is something you should only do with your doctor's support and care..for any condition.

We have members here who are bipolar as well as epileptic and have children, so you are more than welcome here to seek opinions and support.  Just remember that all we can do is offer opinions and support...that nothing we can tell you is better than having your doctor involved, other than the fact that you get first hand experiences and support....which you will find loads of here...up to and including site suggestions that may steer you towards the answers you seek.

Congratulations on your engagement and best wishes for your marriage, I hope everything works out for you and you find the answers and support you need whether it be here or somewhere else.

hi c.   it is possible by taking care of yourself first. speak with your dr. about child bearing and the meds before you take it upon yourself to go off of them. taking yourself off the meds may harm you as well as the baby because your body is going though changes on its own and you dont need the added change from a drug withdrawal,i dont have bipolar but i have been around those that have and came off their meds for what ever reason..before stopping meds, youneed to think of those it may affect other than yourself..i do wish you luch and good health..

Are you worried about the meds? OR being bipolar?

About the meds, I am on Lamictal and am currently 24 weeks pregnant. Just went to the doctor and everything is fine with me & baby. For women with E, neuros recommend staying on the meds. It may be best for you too. Lamictal is one of the safest to be on during pregnancy. Of course, nothing is 100% safe. And, during pregnancy, my dosage is increasing approx. 50 mg every 2 weeks b/c of increased blood flow and body mass.

Anyway, I think the best thing to do is to talk to your doctor and have a consult with a high-risk OB, who can talk you through what extra monitoring you may need during pregnancy. I doubt they will recommend going off the meds.

I can understand your fear of pregnancy, as almost every woman in our culture fears it to some extent. This probably isn't the best place to ask advice regarding your exact condition imo.

I can personally recommend a depression chat room. People there have a variety of illnesses, so there's a good chance you'll run into someone who's both bipolar and a mommy.  People are sympathetic and kind, rather than explosive with one another, and that sure does help when you're already anxious.

I'M A MOM OF TWO BEAUTIFUL GIRLS. I'M NOT BIPOLAR  BUT I HAVE EPILEPSY.  I WASN'T READY TO BE A MOMMY, NO ONE WAS.  I HAD MY FIRST ONE WHEN I WAS 20.  I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET MARRIED, FINISISH COLLAGE, GET A JOB THEN HAVE KIDS.  BUT YOU KNOW THERE IS NOTHING 100%.  I WAS WORRIED AT FIRST, MY GYN/OB CHECKED ME OUT TOP TO  BOTTOM.  I WAS A SPECIAL PATIENT PROBABLY  B/C I WAS THE FIRST ONE SHE HAD WITH E/P AND PREGNANT.  I WAS GOING THERE TOO OFTEN.  WHEN I ASKED THE NURSE SAID IT WAS JUST TOO KEEP A SAFE EYE WITH ALL MY MEDS.  AND I TOOK A LOT OF MEDS.  THE FIRST BIRTH TOOK ALL MOST 23 HOURS, THAT WAS ALEXIS.  ALEXIS IS MY SWEET HEART,  SAVE THE WORLD,  OH BUT SHE CAME OUT BIT##ING.  SHE WAS HEALTHY,  STILL IS. SHE PLAYS  BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL,  AND IS A CHEERLEADER.  SHE'S IN BETA.  NOW TO BE IN BETA YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP A  3.5 GRADE LEVEL.  HOW SHE CAN DO THAT I DON'T NO.  SHE'S JUST SMART.  HER SISTER, KAYLA IS JUST AS SMAT AND ADDITUDE.  KAYLA IS SMART, SHE'S IN BETA, SHE'S A CHEERLEADER, SHE'S PLAYS SOFTBALL.  SHE WENT OUT DURING THE SCHOOL FOR AN ATHELTIC COURSE AND CAME IN 3RD PLACE . BUT HEY HOW MANY WERE ABLE TO GO AT ALL THAT'S MY FIT AND FAST PRETEEN.   THAT'S WHY I SAY ONE WANT'S TO SAVE IT AND ONE WANTS TO BLOW IT UP! FIND A OB/GYN  THAT WOULD BE CARING FOR YOU FIRST AND GET HIS/HER ADVICE AND YOUR OTHER DR.'S ADVICE. ALSO HAVING HELP AROUND IS ALWAYS NEEDED, IT WAS FOR ME.
