My parents dont care...I feel soooo alone!

My names Bree and im 19 years old....I had my first siezure when i was 17 on December 5 2005. It happened at my friends house...out of no where. She had had previous experiances with siezures so she called 911... I dont really remember much of what happened except for what my friend had told me. But the one thing that sticks out the most was when she called my dad to tell him what was going on and all he could say was I guess will be at the hospital...She then called my mom who i no londer live with and she said if it gets any worse ill come down....What kind of parents act like that when there only child has 2 siezures in one night??( i had another one at the hospital) So until i turned 18 in june i was on Valproic acid 4 pills 2xs a day...But once i turned 18 i no longer had medial insurance and couldnt afford the $600 a month perscription. As of May of last year untill December of last year I was living in my car...So as you can imagine I had no money and o place to get a good nights sleep...I begged my dad to let me move back home but he said no because me and my stp mom dont get along.... So i had another siezure in september in my friends car...she knew i had epilepsy because i tell all my friends to either call 911 or my dad...She just let me go through it and took me to her house to sleep it off....Then I had my most recent one on the 11th of feb, this year... It was my worst one yet...I was standing up when it happened so i fell forward and bit my tounge for the first time...there was blood all over my friends bathroom floor and it just so happens that the person who helped me this time was my same friend from my first one....she called 911 and i went to the hospital....she also called my dad...once i was at the hospital and became a little bit consous she told me He said he wasnt coming because he had to work in the morning....I started crying....So i told her to dial for me so i could talk to him....i was cring my eyes out because all he could say was no im not coming...ur fine... i have work in the morning....and i called my mom and she said you need to start taking care of yourself and i cant believe you had another one...whats going on with you....blah blah blah....I just feel soooo alone.... Why do they not care....This isnt my fault...right??? I feel sooo guilty...

Hi, I am 25 and when I was younger after I had my surgery to stop the seizures my parents neglected me to.  So now I am trying to apply for medicaid and SSI disability.  Try these sites. From what I have read,  If you go to your local health deparment they will assign you a counselor to guide your application and get you assistance for everything from housing, to a job, to food and medical care.  I totally understand, after my surgery at age 9 (almost 10), my parents told me to take care of myself and neglected all their parental duties.  I will pray for you that you will receive assistance and overcome the hell your parents are putting you through.  I am finding out that their is assistance out there.

Hey Bree...I am sooo sorry. Reading your story actually made me tear up a bit. I cannot believe your parents could be so cruel to their own child!

If you wanna talk that'd be cool. I'm 20, so we're almost the same age. I think it would be good for me to talk with someone who has epilepsy as well, so if you wanna, just write back...ill give ya my aim?

Good luck!

As a mom of a daughter who has had Left TLE for over 10 yrs, I feel for you dear. I'm so sorry  they are not there for you now when you need it most. Sending the hugs and prayers your own family should be giving you now. I will be praying for you.

Bree,

I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this without the suppport of your own flesh & blood! My son had a total of 3 seizures all when he was sleeping! We don't know the cause of it! He took a regimine of meds for 3 years, and the doctor took him off of it. Two weeks later he had his 3rd seizure. So,we're back to square one again. Stay strong! Be a fighter! We'rein your corner!

Sorry you are having a bad time and I have no idea what to tell
you.  I just wish you luck and remember this to shall pass just
like dysentary.  Actually if you  survive this you'llget the
last laugh because one day they will be old sick and looking for a hand
out what you do is don't help them which means you get your
revenge.  Also later you may want to get some counselling to from
a priest or the chaplin at the hospital.  I think you should apply
for both medicaid and a disability or welfare since you qualify for
disability most likely.  Get medicaid and get tested get you a
good doctor and find a priest that you trust or some other person whom
you can call when you feel threatened or are just are scared.

Barbara in Houston ...You should be feeling alone. You are. However, you have come to the right place for resources. In Texas you can get Medicaid. You can also contact the drug manufacturer, they will often send you a year's worth of coupons for refills. Your doctor may have free samples...ask for all the free samples you can get. Forget about your parents not caring. This is it. You CAN do this. You WILL do this successsfully despite the lack of parental support. GO GET IT DONE. DEMAND GREAT HEALTH CARE.

Hi Bree, I just want to say that I feel that is absolutely horrible that your parents aren't there for you when you need them the most. You are so young and it's just like they are leaving you to fin for yourself with a medical condition that is absolutely dangerous! You are not alone, and I'm glad that you have a good friend that you can count on for support. I started having seizures when I was 14, and thankfully my family helps support me (I'm 28 now). You should find a free clinic in your area, if you don't have insurance and can't afford your medication they will help get it for you. You can also look for what they call "teaching hospitals" in your area that will pay for all of your medical care. I live in Virginia and currently see a neurologist at MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va. I don't pay one dime for my appointments or my medicine. The doctors there are some of the best in the country. You should definetly qualify for something like that. Hospitals like that can do so much for you, I am even getting ready to have brain surgery to correct my seizures and it is absolutely free. Anyways, always remember that when you feel like you're alone and no one understands what you're going through, you can always rely on God for comfort. He will never leave your side. After 14 years of uncontrolled seizures, he's always been here for me. I will pray for your safety and for your parents, hopefully they will come around and realize they need to be more supportive and loving. Good luck to you and God bless!     Laurie

I am really sorry about what your going through your parents should be more supportive I had my first seizure when I was 17 myself I know how difficulf it can be there is another website called www.dailystrength.org if your interested for peolple with seizures if you need someone to talk to. And this is not your fault you have nothing to feel guily about.

I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you Bree. It sounds like you cannot depend on your parents for finanical and emotional support. You need to get in contact with social services and find out what type of public assistance is available to you. The hospital can put you in contact with a social worker who can assist you. I would also get in touch with the your local epilepsy foundation who may also be able to help you. Their website is located here: http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/aboutus/loader.cfm

Bree,

I am so sorry that your parents are too concerned with their own issues to care about their daughter.  Do you have any other relatives near by that could possibly give you support (like a grandparent)?  I hope so. Please know that you are not alone in the world. Try to find a local shelter or church in the meantime where you can get some support, even if it is only a bed to sleep in and a meal for the night. My family will be praying for you to find the support that you need.  Good luck and God bless.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, Bree...  I had to try to find help when dealing with seizures when I was younger (and, luckily, had a good roommate) b/c of a brain injury. There's nothing more frightening than being young AND know you can't always control your brain.

There IS help out there, though - have you checked for local sliding-scale clinics that can help with treatment?  There is also http://www.needymeds.com/  -- that site has a great wealth of information to help you get your medications at a reduced, or no cost.

Also - I don't know what you do for money, but there are some places that offer benefits for part-time jobs (Starbucks comes to mind) that might help you get insured more easily than having to worry about FT employment on top of everything you're dealing with right now.

Just remember - there IS help out there... just because it doesn't come from someone w/the same last name as you doesn't make it any less. Good luck.
