On Keppra, Baby on the Way

Hi.  I am 23 years old and have been on 2000mg of Keppra a day for over three years.  I have also been seizure free ever since I started Keppra, and with no side effects.  I recently found out that I am pregnant with my first child.  I am ecstatic, but I can't help worrying about the unknown effects of Keppra on my baby.  My neuro is keeping me on the full dose for the duration of my pregnancy.  Other than taking extra good care of myself, does anyone have any advice?  Has anyone else gone through this that has a positive outcome?  A negative one?  I guess I am just searching for some sort of positive reinforcement to put my mind at ease a bit.  Thanks for reading.

I recently found out that I am pregant as well. I am not sure how long yet and will be having my first ultra sound in a couple of days.  My husband and I have talked to my neurologist about having a baby so he decided to give me pregnancy tests during my monthly check ups.  Right now, he is having the OBGYN send me to the lab to check my Lamictal levels. Like most of you I am taking 500mg of Lamictal and 1750 mg. of Keppra. One advantage that I believe I have is that I have not had any seizures for over 2 years and had a very successful surgery done to my Left Temporal Lobe in November 2008. Epilepsy is not very common in my family as well as my husband's So I do feel like my risk of birth defects is minor although, doctors still want to be cautious of course. I am 29 and had my first seizure when I was 24. Other than the surgery, the Lamictal and the Keppra have done wonders in fact, I am in the prosess of being weaned off of the Keppra since the surgery was successful. I was on 2000mg of the Keppra prior to my surgery and was on 500mg of Dilantin at the time as well and hve been off of it for over a year now. Even though I feel that thins should be good. I still just want to be careful. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well like all of you guys Im scared to. Ive have grand-mal seizures since I was 10 and now Im 27. Ive been on lamictal for year and have been on keppra about a year. Recently I just found out I am pregnant. This is my first I have days when I worried and good days. But its scary because Im on two meds instead of one. Im defineitily glad there are others who have been on keppra. It gives me better hope.

shypom...

I am thinking of having a child but on combined meds keppra and lamictol 400mg lamictol and 2000mg keppra and worried about side effects during pregnancy also have clonazepam my neuro says risks are low on combined combo/

I was told Id have a scan by a specialist obstertrition during pregnancy scanned regulary looked after by midwives, gp, consultant and neuro Im still worried despite all this specialist care I would receive I have got two children already both with some kind of medical problems so worried a bit more although they say the risk is extremely low.

Can anyone help me with some advice as well plus have my age against me as well 40 talked about amniocentisis but thats a different kettle of fish as well.

Please can anyone help me.

I had my first child when I was 28 and was on Keppra (3000mg./day), Tegretol Xr 400 & 200(1200mg./day), and Topomax.  At my first visit to the neurologist, he went down a list of all the possible things that could go wrong.  By the time I left, I was concerned to say the least.  Because of my epilepsy though, I was considered a high risk pregnancy and there for saw my O.B. doctor more frequently than normal to keep in check.  As far as meds, I had to gradually go up about every two months on Keppra to keep up with the growing baby.  Long story short, all three of my little angels have come out fine.  Our middle child did have ear problems when she was first born, but this was more associated with family history than the meds.  I know it's scary, but the chances of any medical problems actually occuring due to anti epileptic meds are actually about 2%... very slim basically.  It's not like your baby will be taking the exact dossage of pills you take, she will only get a very small portion.  Just keep your chin up and talk to your doctor... ask alot of questions.  Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi there. My name is Samantha and I was diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy about six or seven months ago and I'm 15 years old. I know that is WAY to young to even be worrying about having a baby, but I'm the type of person who thinks about the future and everything. I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing their stories and everything because I read something on the internet that implied a lot of children whose mothers take Keppra and other epilepsy medications are born with birth defects and all of these posts reassured me that while there is a risk, there is no guarantee. Thank you :)

My name is Debbie.  I became pregnant with my first child at the age of 24 of course while taking Kepra.  My Doctor and I agreed not taking medication to keep my seizures under control could be potentially fatal to myself and or my child.  I took Kepra all through my pregnancy.

My son was born in 2005.  9pnd 11oz beautiful bouncing baby boy.  In the first 3 months we noticed a few develop mental issues.  He is now five and has a mild form of Autism.  I 18months after my first son I became pregnant with my 2nd son who is now 3 and has no issues except your typical hyperactive 3 yr old.  The difference between the 2 pregnancies; the first one I was on Keppra the second I didn’t take Keppra.  Am I saying Keppra caused the Autism no because honestly the effects of Keppra on children and prenatal are uncertain as the same is for Autism.  The reason I post is no matter what you take during pregnancy your little one is getting a direct line.  Do your research as did I and be prepared there may be complications but go with the flow.

I HAVE BEEN ON KEPPRA FOR A YEAR AND DEPAKOTE SINCE I WAS 6 ..I AM 19 NOW I DID MY RESEARCH EARLY IS IT TRUE THAT SEIZURES INCREASE DURING PREGNANCY? I AM ONLY GOIG BASED ON WHAT I READ AND NO I AM NOT PREGNANT BUT IM CURIOUS BECAUSE I DO WANT KIDS SOME DAY

I was diagnosed with petit mal seizures when I was 6 years old.  I started taking keppra about 6 years ago.  I was also very nervous about making the decision to stay on keppra with the little studies they have done.  I took Keppra through my entire pregnancy with no problems.  They did increase my medication by 250mg so I had to take 1250 a day as a precautionary.  I never had a seizure.  I ended up having a healthy baby boy and he is now one years old and perfectly healthy.  I also chose to breastfeed only for a month because there were only 12 studies done on it.  I felt that it would be better with such little studies for him to get him his main nutrients at first and stop after that.  There is a national aed program for pregnant woman ask your obgyn and they should have the phone number to call.  Good luck everything should go fine.

I recently had my first child as well around similar age and i was vary paranoid. I had 1 seizure around 4 months and was so scared. from what i recorded i had the double vision and hearing things but honestly cant remember because it says in my book 'seizure?' so it may or may not have been one but close enough. my 2nd seizure which was i know a seizure for sure because it was just days after giving birth when my son didnt make it-well he made it to my heart but not this earth, but the aura was coming and thats when i started clearing everything around me and called anyone i new but no answer then went litterally banging on the nabors door because i new it was coming but of course no help so i sat on the couch and waited. but i am taking Keppra as well 1000mg twice a day but when i was pregnant my docter upped them to 1 1/2 twice a day, mainly because i had to hound him for it because my last seizure was only 2 months before being pregnant and i was scared. even after i gave birth they kept me on that do to possibly post pardem depression because i was a reck after my son passed. its only been 4months but i am still taking 1 1/2 but have had only 1 seizure since but lots of auras which ive been looking in to that might have nothing to do with my brain, but emotions or stress causing this. ide say ask your docter definetly, considering this is your first child you will be full of all kinds of emotions on life in general and your kid coming might get your brain just going like a train and you definetly dont want to crash with passangers. i hope this has helped in any way.   : ) (sorry for the spelling-that was my side effect from my surgery)

hi    i have never posted a comment on the site before.but thought i should if it could helpsomeone or ease ther e mind during  pregnancy. i am23 yrs old and delivered a healthy 6lb 10oz baby girl 2 wks ago . istarted  having gran mal seizures aprox 4_5yrs ago and was placed on a low dose of keppra and always seem to have another seizure within afew monthes, with each seizure my med was  inceased . i now take 3000mg per day and did so through my entire pregnacy. my neuro never wanted to change or add any other meds in case i ever did beome pregnant, its suppose to be the safest.i did have 2 seizures while pregnant @14weeks and again @27 wks. i did  reqest to see a peri neonatologist while pregnant. i wanted every level2 sono an blood test i coulld have done. i dont think my ob thought it was necessary but i did, they  didnt seem to educated on epilepsy and pregnancy, acted as if it wasnt a big deal.also  please make sure  you are taking extra folic acid during your pregnancy, this also helps with birth defects because keppr  can cause nero tube defects  [clef palate, spina bifida]and this is why u need to be seen by high risk phycicians starting early in your prenancy.i worried alot an prayed alot during these past 9mths but everything has seemed to work out . icant say what the  future will bring for my baby as far as  learnig disablities or speech delays ect but she seems perfect now ,very alert and active.now all i have to worry about is the sleep deprivation[ haha].good luck and i will be praying for u and your baby

kesley...

Just curious if you experienced any side effects from the Keppra ever? Especially when the keppra was increased?

mnmora...

Stay on you meds whatever you do. If its working for you then stick with it. Me and my fiance were planning on having a baby so, I went to visit my neurologist. Even though there was almost no risk she wnted to switchme 1200mg to Keppra bc that is one of the safest.

Well, whats even more dangerous than medication, is having a seizure while you're pregnant. Since Keppra didn't control seizures, I ended up having a miscarrage and loosing my baby in addition to a gran mal seizure up to twice a month.

Hi, my name is Lyndsay and I've had epilepsy for almost three years. I currently take 1000/mg a day of Keppra and started taking the meds after my first son was born and have been seizure free since then. You have no idea how much your stories have eased my mind. My husband and I are discussing have another baby soon and I've paniced about what will happen to the baby during the pregnancy along with controlling my seizures.

I found out I had epilepsy after my son was born, sleep deprivation, and have yet to have another seizure since I began taking Keppra. I did breastfeed on Keppra with my son, but only for a few months because of worrying about the meds going into his system. Although the breastfeeding was fine, my biggest fear has been that of my next child and their health, but from all of your stories I feel like Keppra is the best medicine to be on and as many of you said, just control the things you can ie. sleep, eating right and exercising.

Thank you so much for all of your stories. Best of luck with all of your pregnancies.

Congrats on the baby! I was on Keppra and Lamictal when I was expecting and had absolutely no problems--she's 4 now and very energetic.  As long as you eat healthy, exercise, and get enough sleep you should be fine. A word of caution, breastfeeding while on Keppra is not recommended.

i got the okay from my OB, ped, and neuro (just going to go ahead and plug MINCEP...they are amazing!!) while i was pregnant to BF before i even thought about it.  the manufacturer of keppra advises against it (probably because of lawsuit issues), but i have been told that the benefits outweigh the risks.  in my situation, it worked out best for me and my baby because she is perfectly healthy, but of course it is different for everybody!

I have to agree. I began taking Keppra when my son was a month old and the doctors said the benefits outweig the risks. They told me what to look out for but on the A-C Scale of what was safe and not they said it was one of the best meds to be on.

jacesm...

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to post a quick update to this thread that I started in Feb. of 2008 when I had just found out I was pregnant. I took 2000mg of Keppra a day and had no seizures during my pregnancy. I kept a close following with my neuro and OB. At first, my OB had me as high risk, but after my PERFECT looking level II ultrasound, she stopped using that term because everything was going so well, but continued to take special care of me. I am so lucky to have been surrounded by such a great team of medical professionals. I agree with everyone who has said don't be afraid to get a second opinion and to get really involved with the level of care you are getting. I took a prenatal and 2mg of folic acid a day as well. It is now July 2009 and I have a happy, healthy, amazing 10 month old girl, Jordyn. I am still breastfeeding as well, and I am very happy to say that! I feel that the Keppra has no effect on her, as they say she was getting more of it in the womb than through my milk. She is on solids now as well, and I see no difference between any of her patterns than when she was exclusively fed breastmilk. She is a very bright baby, normal and happy all the way. She was 7lbs 9oz, we had a wonderful delivery with no complications. She started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks old, which I got lucky because my seizures always happen when I am sleep deprived. I took (and still do) extra good care of my self during pregnancy to make sure I was getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and staying physically active. I think for anyone pregnant and on Keppra, the worst thing to do is worry. I believe in getting the best medical care for you and your baby by people who genuinely care and who you can trust. Never be afraid to ask questions and demand straight answers. I didn't have any seizures after Jordyn was born either, so my neuro agreed to let me cut my dose to 1500mg recently. I hope my story has helped any others out there that are in or have been in my shoes. All of the other comments from you all after my original post really helped me through the beginning of my pregnancy. Many, many thanks to all you strong mommies.

Hi, Im 22 and I am almost 5 months pregnant, I dont take keppra but when I read what you wrote it reminded me of how scared I was. Im on lamictal and have been for a while. In the begining I was really nervous and afraid of what was going to happen to my baby. Well I researched it and this was one site I found and there are so many positive stories on here! I honestly dont think I seen one negative one. After reading these stories it really helped put my mind at ease. After finding out the information and learning the facts I wasnt as scared, my doctor also assures me that everything is going great and is going to be fine. I know with alot of siezure meds everything is just theory and not a proven fact. Dont get me wrong, there are meds out there that are harmful but there are also ones that are safer for you while pregnant. If I was you I would research it and speak with your nuero. But I wouldnt stress about it, take good care of yourself  and do what them docs say and you will be fine.

I'm a new poster here.  I am 35 years old and have been having seizures since high-school, but rarely - only when tired/stressed and around menses.  I was on tegretol for a while, then had no insurance and spent many years without being on anything.

Then, I suspected I might be pregnant, and went to a neurologist who wanted to put me on depakote.  i have heard bad things about this drug and pregnancies, and so asked for a second opinion.  he refered me to an epileptologist who put me on keppra - a total of 1500 mg a day.  i was part of the study, and was monitored monthly for levels, as well as by my obgyn and a specialist in fetal-maternal medicine.  As i had just started on Keppra, I did have some side effects - no hallucinations, but rage and tears - mostly i just figured it was pregnancy hormones.  As is now standard with anti-convulsants, they did a fetal echo and all the other tests and all was well.

Son is now 2 years old - was 9 lbs. 15 oz and 23 inches long - no complications (he was a c-section).  I also breastfed, and he is a bright, chatty, active two year old boy.  Most of the phases (like not wanting to sleep) i chalk up to being two rather than any medication issues.  I stopped breastfeeding full time at 6 months as went back to work full-time, but continued to suplement until he was 9 mos when he weaned himself.

I am now 18 weeks pregnant with second child.  have had one seizure in 3 years, right after I stopped breastfeeding - probably a hormonal thing.  did not have any while pregnant and none while breastfeeding.  Have not had any during this pregnancy. feel fine, tired, but have a 2 year old which is to be expected.

for those inquiring on the safety, be willing to ask for a second opinion.  and, if possible go to a specialist rather than a neurologist.  get involved in your own care; ask questions, and be willing to be watched and examined more than a 25 year old without a medical history.  take the folic acid - while it's not known if keppra has the same effect, it doesn't hurt, and it's good for the baby.  don't stop eating, as you risk anemia, which makes you more suceptible to a seizure.  get sleep, and all the other things good pregnant women do.  While the breastfeeding is a choice you'll have to make, for me the benefits to my child far outweighed the slight risk (studies confirm only trace amounts in breastmilk).  My son had no withdrawl issues, and no noteable behaviour issues.  He just wanted real food.

Don't let worry get the best of you - do genetic testing if it will make you more comfortable, and consider CVS or an amnio if you want some definitive answers prior to carrying to term.  These are not without risk, but worry, pregnancy, meds, and epilepsy do not make good bedfellows either.  We just had a triple screen, and our results came back as the risk rate of a 20 year-old with no health problems.  Fetal echo next month, which son Eli also had with excellent score.  I also had gestational diabetes.  and now, I am officially of advanced maternal age.  I am still on 1500 mg of keppra, and plan on breastfeeding.

That's my story - hope it helps.

 Hello

The feed back sounds positive for keppra so I hope everything goes really well for you.

I came on here because I can't feel my coil and am on keppra and was concerned I could've become pregnant.

But it seems I've had a little period. I should've felt relieved but don't. I have already had a child born with some birth defects and avoided pregnancy since, as was scared of the consquences. I had a termination once already so don't want to do so again. I've gone from worried to feeling very disappointed.

I still have to get the coil sorted out so I guess I've been given a second chance to prepare myself first. I see my nero in June.

Hi Amy,

I can relate. I got pregnant Dec 2006 on Keppra.  My first baby.  I quickly entered the National Antiepileptic Drug Registry as well as the Keppra Pregnancy Registry.  I gained 30 pounds with pregnancy.  Thus I increased my dosage.  Prior to pregancy as well as now on the same dosage.  I take 3000 mg a day pre pregnancy.  Took up to 4500 during pregnancy.  High Risk OBGYN monitored us carefully during pregnancy.  I was warned the stress of labor might induce a grand maul seizures... so I said just plan a c section.   I took a high dosage of Folic Acid, prenatal vitamins, and the Expectra Lipil DHA supplements every day even throughout breast feeding.

I was so grateful to the entire medical community!  Bella was born 9/7/7 weighing 9 pounds 6 ounces.  Seems healthy.  I exclusively breast fed her till she was 17 months old!  Doctors told me she was exposed to more medication during pregnancy than through the milk.

Take good care of yourself!  Take each day as it comes and hope for support.  When I breast fed, I did have seizures.  But I did not take any adavan to stop them.  That medication would pass in the milk so I just dealt with the pain knowing it was best for the baby and one day she would be on solids.

Facinating part is that I only got my period 4 times in the 17 months I breast fed.  Common if you breast feed not to have a period.  Which meant I only had seizures 4 times.  Seems most of my epilepsy has shifted to only happen prior to menses.  The progestron drop causes either a metabolism change or something that induces seizures.  For some women, breast feeding can help us to NOT have seizures!  Yes, I still have other types of small seizures when I do not have enough sleep or are under stress.  But amazing how strong I became once I had a child.  I have been so healthy!  I am now begining birth control pills to trick my body to think I am pregnant, will stop my cycle all together in hopes it will stop the seizures.  I will still need the Keppra, this is in conjunction with.

I am thrilled with Keppra!  I hope you have a beautiful pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Hi Amy,
Congratulations! I am currently 14 weeks pregnant with my first. I did much research prior to getting pregnant in consultation with my neurologist to ensure I was doing what we thought was the best option for our baby. I am currently on 3000mg of Keppra as well as 5 mg of frizzium. I have decided to stay on my medication as I was having grand mals prior to Keppra (6 to 8 at a time) and having one those while pregnant is not the best outcome. Keppra has stopped my grand mals. Talk to your neurologists and get his/her opinion. If required speak to another to get another opinion. All the very best. I have to say I am feeling tired on a new level with the pregnancy...but overall I feel okay.

Maggie...

hi, just wanted to say, i was on keppra and working up on lamictal, when i found out my IUD was gone and i was 18 weeks pregnant. right away they did a level 2 ultrasound, sent us to genetic counceling, all that....but, baby is six months old now and perfectly healthy. the docs did advise me to bottle feed, which i did since i was afraid of what breastmilk might contain for her.my doc said if she got used to it, the theory is that once you wean her, she could start having seizures. anyway, bottlefeeding helped too, in the area of getting help in the middle of the night feedings, since sleep is so important for us with e.

after she was born, i had 2 grand mals in 2 months which dr. said was from lack of sleep. but my obgyn said it was probably due to hormone fluctuation. they have since put me on different drugs, and i am doing much better, but also baby is now sleeping thru the night so that helps too.

when we found out we were pregnant by the way, they took me off the lamictal, and instead upped my dose of keppra, said it was safer than being on 2 meds during pregnancy. however, i continued having complex partials the whole way. when she was born tho, my cps's stopped completely...hormones again? dont know, but havent had any grand mals since those last 2 right after her birth.

anyway...healthy baby, good news.

notfis...

Hi Amy I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant. Four weeks ago I had 5-6 grand mals followed by continuous silent seizures for 10-12 hrs. In the hospital they put me on Dylantin and 3000mg of Keppra. I'm currently only taking the 3000mg of Keppra a day. So far I haven't had any more seizures and my baby is doing wonderful!! My doctors have re-assured me that Keppra is a type of medication, that if needed, can be given to infants. A dilemma you never want to come across is the risks of taking your child early in pregnancy or medicating the problem while pregnant with your child. The greater risks to me would be falling while seizing and pregnant. When put in the position, and being supported by the doctors, I feel that the best choice is being made. Listen to your piers, doctors, and HEART. I'll pray for you and your baby. Has anyone experienced there newborn having any withdraws from the medication?

Take Care!

Hi Jstone,

My name is Connie. I just had my first grand mal seizure in early january 2009. It was so violent that I dislocated both shoulders and broke my right humerous all due to the convulsions. I just found out that I am 5 wks pregnant today and I am currently taking a very low dose of Keppra (only 1000 mg every day). I was curious since you have had trouble with frequent grand mals, could you ever sense that you were going to have a seizure before it happened? And if so what alerted you? And also were yours as violent? I am so afraid of having another seizure while pregnant because it has only been 2 months since my first seizure. I would love to know if there are any warning signs so i can try to prepare myself a little and at least keep from falling and hurting the baby or injuring myself again. Thanks.

clmom2be

HI Amy,

I had a baby boy last year whilst on Lamictal. I suffered a grand mal seizure in the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy and the doctors took the action of inducing my baby. I used to have on going petit mal seizures up until I was introduced to Keppra 4 months ago. I am now on both lamictal and keppra, and, fingers crossed, I have had no seizures, grand or petit at all! I am planning my second baby now and have been advised to stay on both tablets. from the comments below, it sounds like there is a lot of confidence about keppra whilst preganant. I believe that whilst i am not suffering with seizures whilst on this medication, i am safe and ultimatly so is my baby.

 good luck!

 tina.

ps. my first baby was born perfectly healthy - shaken, but not stirred ... ha ha

alfieri

I know how you feel. I gave birth to my first child in just a few months ago. At the beginning of my pregnancy i was taking 4000 mg a day of Keppra (I know a LOT). IN MY OPINION my child's safety was more important than mine. I weened myself down to 500 mg a day by my second trimester. BUT I was also taking 500 mg a day of Carbatrol. They say the birth defects are most likely to happen in the first trimester, and let me say that my child is perfect. He is four months and developmentally ahead of the game. There were no complications with him, and everything went smoothly. There may be long term effects that we don't know about but we can't worry about that now. Chances are you will have a normal, healthy, wonderful child. If something does happen, then you will still have a wonderful blessing from the Lord.

mugwump

Hi Amy! This is a coincidince. My name is Amy, 26 and I just had my 3rd child. But while i was pregnant with him, I developed epilepsy, and was put on 1000mg of keppra, which didn't work and still had seizures. Doctor was going to put me on a higher dose but after praying about it alot, i said no way, and i wanted to start getting of the meds. Doctor said it would be better to start the taper off the drug until after my postpartum checkup. I am still having seizures and I am off the medication completely because there are no proven studies on nursing and being on keppra at the same time. But I only have seizure 1 every 2 or 3 months so I don't really care to be on the medication when it doesn't help. They are now suggesting lamictal, and i am in the process about praying for that too.

Congrats on the pregnancy and i wish the best for you, and the only thing i can say is that you just need to pray about it. I know It seems hard about it especially if you're spiritually drained from your seizures but honestly, if you just ask god to take your seizure away and what should you do, he'll listen. Need anymore advice? Write me!!!!

Hi Amy, I have had seizures for the last ten years now. I am now 16 weeks in my third pregnancy. I have two boys my oldest is five and my baby is eighteen months. In my first prenancy I took Depakote and phenabarbatol. It made me gain alot of weight and I had no energy. My oldest son was born with severe speech problems and mentally delayed. Last year he was diagnosed with Autism for the first time and goes to a special education school. In my second pregnancy they wanted me to try something different because my neurologist doesn't recommend Depakote during pregnancy. So, i then started taking Kepra it worked at first but the seizures still were coming and I was on 1500 mg. So they decided to add Lamictal and I stayed in the hospital for 4 months with severe weakness but the seizures dissapeared. My baby is very smart even with the complicated pregnancy he walked and 9 months and is above average in his age in everything. This pregnancy the seizures started at 3 weeks gestation actually thats how I found out I was pregnant. I started on 500 mg 2x a day. Then after being in the hospital off and on for the last two months they raised it to 1000 mg 2 x a day. This time I have been feeling very tired and I am struggling with depression. But, I know from past experiences that its the best medication during pregnancy so I am just being monitored very closely by my perintologist and my Neurologist. So I wish you well with this pregnancy. We will find out if there is any problems with our baby next week during our ultrasound so please pray that all is well. I pray that all is well with your pregnancy. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask me ok.

Trishina

Hi I know that risks are different when on 2 AEDs and wanted to know if anyone here was taking Lamictal and Keppra while pregnant. I'm 23 and would like to have a child sometime within the next 3 or 4 years. I also have tried different birth controls, but all caused me to have seizures by decreasing the medication in my system and I would like to know if anyone has found a birth control that works for them.

Hi Nicole! I was taking Lamictal and Keppra when I was pregnant and everything went fine.  As for birth control, my doctor suggested an IUD--it works great (plus I don't have to take any other pill besides my meds!:) Hope this helps, T.

I am currently taking topomax 150 mg QD and keppra 3000 mg QD. I got on YAZ and I have found that I have not had a single peti mal seziure in the past 6 months since being on the YAZ. It is a great pill. Now I am looking to get off of the pill and thinking about getting pregnant, but I am scared because I want to have a healthy baby.... What to do????  I would try the YAZ.

Hi Kelley,

I am on 3000mg of Keppra and 5mg of frizzium.  I am currently 6 weeks pregnant - however to get here I did alot of research in terms of what was the best for me and the potential baby. We started thinking about getting pregnant about 8 months ago...I came up with this decision in consultation with my husband, neurologist and geneticist. The end being to stay on my medication...initially I was going to get off my medication however I changed my mind.  Keppra has stopped me having grand mal seizures...I could not think of anything worse than having one of those when pregnant.  The reality is there is not alot of research into being on Keppra and being pregnant and the impact of the drug latter on the child. I am yet to make a decision about breast feeding however I still have 8 months to come up with an answer. The medication has only been on the market for about 13 or 14 years so there is still a lot more to find out.  Other than feeling very tired I am really hoping all goes well.  I went through the being scared; it is not good however I tried to get as much information as I could to make the best decision for me, my husband and now the baby.

All the best...Maggie

I tried lamictol and it didn't work for me.  I have JME and it didn't control my arm jerks.  My doctor suggested keppra to me.  What medicine are you on right now for your epilepsy?

galicia11

Keep your heads up, all of you!  I've had epilepsy since I was 15, and am now 28.  For my first daughter I was on Keppra.  She's now 2, bright, and beautiful.  I just had my second daughter, thanks to God's miracles as I also have Endometriosis and multiple cyst issues to boot...  For her I was on Topamax, and I had several problems with that one.  Weight gain -- I was severely underweight the whole time, and my baby kept losing weight and sleeping tons until we took her off the breastmilk.  Now she's also thriving and healthy so far, at 3 weeks.

I know all aren't so lucky, and that there are risks, but I'd put Keppra up against Topamax any day.  It's a good drug, and the only reason I'm off it is because my seizures got worse.  If it works for you, kudos!  And stay on it.  It'll be nice and mild for you and baby.

Congrats and enjoy the ride!  :)

Thank you for your post - I am brand new to this website, but am currently taking Keppra and considering pregnancy in the future.  My doctor has been slowing weaning me off of the medication, and I am anxious to read all the stories from everyone on this site that has experience.  Do you recall the dose of keppra you took while pregnant with your daughter?  Any help would be appreciated!

Good luck to everyone who is pregnant on medication and thank you for participating in the registry. My daughter's biggest problem at 14 is whether she will ever be able to drive. Of course, I've considered the many challenges her future may hold, but with all of you brave pioneers going before her, I'm sure the outlook will be even brighter if she ever decides to become a mom.

MOMFORFIVE,

I've tried Keppra once while I was pregnant with my twins but unfortunately it wasn't the drug for me.  I was told it was one of the safest anti-epileptic drugs out during pregnancy. I feel your baby will be just fine... Keep up with your folic acid, and vitamins and he or she will be just fine.  So far, I have a Dylantin baby, Topamax baby and neurontin baby. How do you feel? Are you okay? Baby's have less side effects on these drugs... but we end up having to take our meds any way. By this time, your baby is used to Keppra in your system already. It'll be fine...you'll see.

Hi,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Keppra Pregnancy Registry released their Interim Report (studies from December 2004-August 2007) in December 2007. You can get a copy by calling the registry at 1-888-537-7734 (1-888-KEP-PREG).

There isn't a lot to it and it's pretty inconclusive but at least it's something.

 take care!

PLEASE REGISTER:)

I am currently trying to become pregnant while taking Keppra.  I just started Keppra due to complications with my previous medications (Lamictal and Clonznapem).  I know you posted this a few months ago, so I wanted to know your update or information you have found.

 Thanks!

Hi JF and other readers!  I had my 20 week ultrasound last week. I had a level 2 ultrasound, which is supposed to be more detailed and would be more apt to find anything wrong if there was something (i.e. cleft lip/palate, spina bifida, and other birth defects associated with anit-convulsants).  It took over an hour, but every last tiny part of her looked absolutely perfect.  Doc said that if there was anything being affected by my medication that it would have shown up on this ultrasound.  Thank God!  We are ecstatic that we are having a girl and that so far, she is perfectly healthy.  I have had much reassurance from the doctor that I have found in my area who has delivered plenty of babies with mothers on Keppra, and each of them have been perfectly healthy.  My neuro has been checking my levels frequently and they have not dropped yet, so I am still on 2000mg/day, but that could change at any time.  Good luck and God Bless!

Congrats Amy!

Reading your posting made me feel so much better about my medication issues.  I am currently on depakote and I already tried lamictol (which didn't work).  He wants to try keppra next and your story has made me feel better about the decision.  What type of epilepsy do you have?  I have JME and I guess some medications don't control it as well as depakote.  Good Luck with your pregnancy!!!

Hey all you brave and wonderful ladies out there! It was a relief to read everyone's comments on keppra and pregnancy. I am 35 years old and just recently discovered that I am now pregnant! I've been diagnosed with epilepsy at 16 and would have real bad grand mal seizures. Been on a ton of different meds. Sometimes the meds just stop working. I've been on Keppra for 3 years and have also been seizure free since Keppra. My neuro. plans to keep me on keppra thru out the pregnancy. I do have faith in my neuro. and in God and pray every night for my baby to be healthy and safe. I would love to connect with other preggo moms -to- be out there so that we can all support each other. Thanks everyone!

Hi Bridget!  Congrats on your recent pregnancy.  I know how it feels to wonder if you are doing the right thing for your unborn child.  Be relieved that you are on Keppra as they say it is the safest med to be on during pregnancy.  I felt terrible taking my meds every day at first, thinking I was hurting my baby, but doing what the doctor said was best.  I have learned through my doctors, neuro and other supportive women that we have little to worry about.  Seeing those perfect little ultrasound pictures of our baby girl told me that I was doing the right thing.  Best wishes for a happy, healthy (and comfortable!) pregnancy.

According to the keppra advice leaflet.  It states if you are pregnant or may be pregnant please inform your doc.

Keppra should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary.  The potential risk to your unborn child is unknown.

Keppra has shown unwanted reproductive effects in animal studies at dose levels higher than you would need to control your siezures.

Breast feeding is not recommnded during treatment.  Hope this was of some use.

Congrats on your pregnancy good luck with your epilepsy

Hello, my name is Laurie. I have had epilepsy for 14 years. I gave birth to a happy, healthy little girl about eight years ago. At the time, I was on Tegretol and Depakote. My doctors took me off of my Depakote, but I continued to take tegretol through my entire pregnancy. I was also worried for my child. However, here we are eight years later and Destiny(my daughters name) is perfectly healthy and sometimes I think she is smarter than me. I would trust your doctors if they think that keeping you on the Keppra is for the best. I am currently on Keppra and it has no real side effects on me. I have heard good and bad things from others about the side effects. Just do the research on side side affects on fetus'. My guess is that if your doctors think it's what's best, they are probably right. I hope this helps you out in some way. Good luck to you and your new baby!
