Trileptal tabs to the generic

Has anyone switch from tabs to the tabs? - I’m about to switch to the generic and would like feedback on the effectiveness of the Generic. This will save me over $1000 a year.
I know all about the debate on insurance and generic meds. I don't have that problem.

I have been on generic Trileptal for 7 monthes. I was put on Tegretol by the emergency room doctor last year after a huge cluster seizure episode the previous July. We live nowhere near a neurologist and it's funny how small town doctors know pretty much nothing about seizure meds.Luckily I have had epilepsy long enough to know about gradually replacing one med with another. For all the doctors knew, just stop this one and take this one...Anyways Tegretol made me feel like I was encased in cement. I had been on name brand Trileptal for 4 years and could no longer afford it. My husband took off with a 20 year old and I have been raising the kids on my own since, making too much for medical assistance and not receiving any benefits from employer(I think I make $50 too much). Well they finally come out with a generic and it's $35 instead of $420...nice. Well I go in today to get my refill and it's $232!!! The pharmacist was very remorseful and said they were threatened by the drug company to raise the price or be fired...something like that. I say ok what am I supposed to do? I cannot afford that price and food for my family. You know I cannot just quit taking it!!! So they charged me $40 and I hope they don't get fired. Oxcarbazepine has been totally great for me except the huge price for it. So now I am trying to get accepted for a discount drug program. I take 1200 mg a day for nocturnal seizure control. I will probably have to be on these things my whole life and I would rather be buying a house then paying a pill mortgage, just saying...

I've been using the generic version of Trileptal (Oxcarbazepin) for 7 weeks now, having been taking off Keppra, and so far, excellent results. I take a total of 900 mg per day, along with 1000 mg of Depakote. My seizures are almost virtually gone. My only side effects are a bit of dizziness and/or confusion. Certainly better than Keppra, on which I'd been for 9 years. I wouldn't feel a bit afraid of using generic. It'll save you much money and is made of the same ingredients! I'd been on Keppra for over 9 years and didn't see it change much when it came to frequency of my seizures.

My daughter has been on trileptal for 9 years, she is 18 and just started having break through seizures.  The Dr. increased her dosage to 600 mg and my bill doubled.  It is so expensive, but we did try the generic for a few days mixed in with her regular and she had several seizures.  I will pay the price for my daughter's safety and health, but I really wish there was some other way.  She will be going to college in 2012 and I worry so much.

Ive been taking trileptal for 9 years to dont switch its the worst thing I ever did.I went from no seizures to 1-2 grandma seizures every 2 days. What makes it so bad my insurance wont let me switch back.

Try a different generic manufacture, There are more then one generic manufacture.
I know of two, I know there are many others.
I switch to a different generic and my seizures came back.
I went back to the other generic and had better results.

my daughter is still on the liquid version of the trileptal.  She doesn't weigh enough yet to get it in pill form.

I had no problems going from trileptal to generic oxcarbazepine. I had about a months supply of trileptal left when I received my supply of the generic. With that months supply I was able to gradually transition to the generic.

I actually made the switch once (not on m own accord). My insurance wouldn't cover name brand and when I went to pick up my Rx the pharmacy changed it to generic. I was very angry about this. I explained to the pharmacist that my Dr. said I can not switch quickly, that I have to do it gradually. The pharmacist explained it to me that my insurance wouldn't cover it any more & that it works the same. I hung My head and walked away thinking..'Well maybe I remembered it wrong.' Thinking maybe he said it when I was in a confused state. I didn't call my Dr. about the incident. 2 weeks in and I had my first seizure in almost 2 years...in the snow, @ night & alone. I was greatly disturbed by this & called my Dr. the next day. He was mad that he was not asked about whether it was o.k. to switch me. The way he described it to me was that it was like I didn't take any Rx for the whole 2 weeks.

Anyway, after I talked to hm and made an appointment he called the pharmacy and told them that I can't take generic. He did all the necessary dotting of the i's and crossing of the t's.

Now we know that I can't take the generic.

One of the other people commented about having more aura's and I agree. Before that seizure I did expierience more auras.

So, I hoped that helped. You never know it may work for you.

Also, If you have problems with a pharmasts, like I did. Call your dr. before settleing for what they say.

i had just experience the same experience you had... i think of saving money  but the result is much  i had more expenses. i tried to switch to a new dr. but i didnt work.. i keep on going back to his clinic and complains about the terrible side effects  of the medicines he has prescribe... now i'm back to zero again. though i didnt inform my doctor..

It is strange that I read this post because I switched to the generic type
this past summer and I never thought that it would make a difference in the
effects of the medication, I was just excited that it would save some money!
But after I switched I seemed to be having quite a few auras (no actual
seizures though) within the first few weeks. I thought perhaps it was a
coincidence, but after seeing this post I am convinced it must have been the
switch to generic that was causing me to have these auras.

I will let you know that these auras did stop about 4 or 5 months ago so I
am thinking that it just had something to do with the adjustment to the generic
type. I seem to be doing great now, so I recommend you switch over and give it
a try for a few weeks, if you don't have any problems keep using it! It is a
real money saver!

Since I am on my parents' insurance, I was forced to make the switch to the generic in late July. The pharmacist made every attempt with the insurance to keep me on trileptal and the phsyician did not want the change but the cost was going to be too much.  After using for 10 days, I experienced a bad saizure on vacation and became very ill to my stomach for the following 24 hours.  Before leaving for college my level was checked.  After two and a half weeks at school, everything got out of control and it was terribly frightening.  I was experiencing so many tremors and seizures (COMPLEX PARTIAL).......perhaps 10 each day that my roommates were aware of.  My friends were afraid to leave me alone.

Luckily I attend a small college and the physician's asst. has worked with my roomies and everyone knows what to expect and how to deal with it.  That doesn't make it less stressful but it helps.

We finally received my blood work and after 1 month on the generic my levels had increased 6 1/2 points.  After another 2 weeks they had increased another 3 points.  It was quite obvious that the generic was working too well.  I now have a new neurologist and am into my 6th week of Lamatril..........I am excited that we now get to start taking me off the generic trileptal.  I have been on trileptal for the past 6 years and I think my body is ready for a change and it is quite obvious that the generic was not for me.

 Good luck !

the switch was horrible for me ...3 break throughs in 6 weeks.  first in 6 years! back to tripletal definitely worth the money.

I recently switched to the generic version and had many many problems. I had been seizure free since March and have had 6 grand mals in the week since I started the generics. My doctor is in the process of trying to get me back on trileptal since the generic can be up to 30% less effective..

So just be aware that the two drugs many not be equally effective..

Jorge, I had surgery and my seizures are under control. I've switched to generic trileptal and it's been working preety good for me. I had two seizures last year while still on trileptal. I've had only one since I switched
