A seizure while driving

I am 23 and suffer from seizures. I was driving my two children to school when i had a seizure. I blacked out and wrecked. Thank god my kids weren't hurt but i ended up staying in the hospital for 38 days and thay told me it was EP and put me on lamictal. I knew something was wrong before the accident but i did not see a doctor. Now i wish i would have.

Melonie,

I am sorry to hear what happened, but thank God you all survived. I too had a car accident in June, 2006. At this time, my doctors had diagnosed me with hypoglycemia and told me to eat more protein (especially almonds...I can't tell you how many almonds I ate this summer)and to eat glucose tablets if I start to feel "funny". Well, I was on my way to get my hair cut when I started to feel "funny" (which I now know is an "aura"). I gobbled down a bunch of glucose tablets, tried to pull over and then passed out. I am lucky to be alive. God was looking out for me on multiple levels:

1) My children were not with me (I am 36 yrs. old and have a 7 year old girl and a 4 year old boy).
2) Two weeks prior, my husband showed me a short cut to my hair stylist. Instead of being on the interstate going 75-80 mph, I was on back roads going 45 mph.
3) I side swiped a car (no one hurt and minimal damage), ran a red light and just missed a telephone pole(says eye witnesses). I landed in a retention pond and thank God it had not been raining lately so I was in no danger of drowning. There was just enough water to ruin my engine and total my car.
4) The only injury I suffered was a sprained ankle.

I have no recollection of any of this. That is terrifying!! I didn't come to until I was being taken away in the ambulance. With lots of false diagnosis, I eventually got to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and was just recently diagnosed with epilepsy. Needless to say, I am not driving. In Florida it is not required for your doctor to report your condition to the DMV, but I am not going to drive for a very long time. My neurologist told me I cannot drive until I am 6 months seizure free. I just had another seizure last week, so my count down has begun again (ugh!!).

I am also on lamictal. I have been on it for 3 weeks. When I had my most recent seizure I was on the lowest dosage (50 mg per day). My neuro. has upped it to 100 mg per day and in 2 weeks I will be at 200 mg per day.

It really stinks losing your independence. Simple things such as taking your kids to the park, having your nails done or shopping have suddenly come to an abrupt end. Thank goodness my husband and I work together and I have very supportive family and friends who help me get around. I also like to cycle and my doctor told me not to do that until I get a handle on this. We usually go snow skiing every winter break but my neoro. told me "no" this year (unless I want to take a chance and ski off the mountain)...also, no more scuba diving.

Now that I have thoroughly cheered you up!! Just wanted to let you know there is someone else who can relate and feel free to talk with me about it anytime.

Take care and GO GATORS!!,

Kristin

Add me to the list. I actually had seizures for months driving but didn't black out (I didnt know what thew were at the time, I just knew I felt weird for a few minutes).......until I drove off the e-way going 80 into a concrete wall.

I have been very VERY fortunate that I had a couple of my seizures right after (I mean not even 1/2 a minute) stopping and parking the car with my wife (back them my fiance) in the car with me.

jj.git...

i too had a grand mal seizure while driving 65mph on an e-way. i am a 52 year old female that has had petit mal seizures all of my life and did not know what they were. these seizures were had after my having an aura. between the stress of life and menopause my seizures became grand mal and my been diagnosed with epilepsy. i am taking keppra now after having had a bad reaction to dilantin. i have chosen not to drive long distances anymore because when i had my accident i was on the way home from work. my job is 44 miles away from my home and with having to drive almost 100 miles a day round trip. i did not hurt myself or anyone during my accident but the possiblity was there. unfortunately i like living. so not being able to drive myself is no big sacrifice. that's why you have family and friends because i am sure that they have needed me for something in the past. count your blessings and continue to live without driving. i do.

So sorry to hear what happened. Thanks very much for sharing this with everyone. Losing a driver's license is so hard, but the consequences can be enormous is a seizure occurs while driving. Glad you are okay and hope things continue to get better.

I also have had 2 seizures while i was driving, the first was i blacked out at 20kph and ended up in the back of car which had a baby in it lucky i was going extremely slow and no one was hurt, the 2nd one i had was when I had just pulled up to the lights and put handbrake on and took car out of gear and had a full seizure but this time my bowels didnt let go and I was again extremely lucky that this one lady had been bothered to call the ambulance for me this seizure happened on dusk where as all my other ones have been dawn, I too lost my license for 6 months and that was a bitter pill to swallow but again like someone else said in here the consequences of continuing to drive are massive, so I can totally understand and sympathise, I was lucky I didnt have my daughter in the car both times that it happened, so to all you out there who think it wont happen to you while you are driving (like I did) be wise to the fact It can happen and it is as scary as hell! I was 26 when all this happened I am 28 now.

I am a high school student who unfortunately suffers from seizures. I have only had two but the doctors say I do not have epilepsy.  I have an appointment coming up next week with a specialist to see what exactly is the problem. Anyway the whole "no driving because of seizures" has been killing me. I feel as though I have completely lost my independence.  I can not come and go as i please. Im 18 and I feel like someone came and took 6 years aways from my life. Leaving me to be a young dependent 12 year old. But I have been reading the stories that you all have put on here and it is definitely showing me that this is more serious than I thought. I could never imagine waking up from a seizure and finding out that some one was injured or even killed because I had a seizure behind the wheel.  Or the possibility of not waking up from it at all. I thank God that my seizures have been in places where I could not hurt anyone or myself (too much). I really felt like I was the only one dealing with this. But fortunately Im not. Thanks all!

I thank God also that I wasn't killed when I had a blackout while driving.  I drove for 5 years while all I had was simple partial seizures and I didn't blackout.  But for some reason the Tegretol stopped keeping them away in 2000, so after 2 blackouts I was switched to Depakote and didn't drive for about a month.  I thought I was better, so I started driving again, and I had a head-on collision.  Thankfully I was on a 2 lane road at rush hour, so I and the other driver were only going about 15 mph and neither of us were hurt.  My sister was driving right behind me, and when I came to she told me that I just slumped over and my truck veered into the oncoming lane, so I am very fortunate and thankful that it didn't happen on a big highway going much faster.  The cop who was there said he wouldn't give me a ticket as long as I didn't drive again, and I haven't because since then I have never even gone for than a few days without having at least partial seizures.  I am very lucky that I have a wonderful wife who is willing to drive me to and from work in addition to all of the driving she needs to do, and although I do wish I could drive sometimes, we have always kept this working with few problems.  I wish everyone with epilepsy can have a great partner like her, since she does extra to make sure that I can live mostly normal.

I now take Lamictal and Keppra, and although they have big side effects, I haven't had a blackout or grand mal since 2004, so I am very thankful for that.  My doctors are wanting to do tests to see if I am eligible for brain surgery, but I won't do it if there are huge risks involved since I can deal with the partial seizures that I have now.  If there is anyone reading this who has had any kind of brain surgery, I would be interested to know if it has helped you much.

I wish everyone with epilepsy well, and like Kristin said, Go Gators!

Hello!  I'm sorry to hear about your situation.  I'm 25, I've had many grand mal seizures in my life.  I've had two accidents due to seizures, both of which I should have died...one of them resulted in the car catching fire, and I was pulled out by someone passing by.  I've had seizures that stopped my heart and required me to be shocked back to life.  I've also lost my license 4 times since I was 18.  It's definitly tough.  I currently do not have my license, and had to move to be closer to work.  The important thing is that you have to learn to make the most of it.  Right now, I ride my bike everywhere, unless its too far away.  I'm using it to get back into shape.  It's an outlet for me to channel my frustrations.  If I were you, I would find some way to not let it run your life.

I know exactly where you're comming from Jay? I lost my license the first time when I was 17 after having a seizure in the passanger seat. I had called my sister to take me to the ER across the street from where I was working because I used to get aura's then before a gran mal I waited the 6mos and California gave me back my license then 9years later I had a partial complex and blew through a red light the witnesses say (I still swear it was green) but they don't know how fast I was going as I pushed the other cars (more than one)through the intersection and into the parking lot on the other side. I was driving a 64 chev pickup and broke the steering wheel with my face my arm and a couple ribs some people in one car were hurt pretty bad and the car they hit had a pregnant lady in it but her car didn't do much damage to the van it hit needless to say even if my seizures do finally stop long enough to drive again I don't think I'll ever take that chance I don't worry about hurting myself I can take a beating but I can't stand the thought of killing someone else.

I recently went the 6 mos. without a seizure and was able to get my license back for a while. My birthday was Nov. 16th, and my Father bought me a car. Nothing much, just transportation to get to and from school. I wish I remembered any of it. I didn't remember having driven the car to school for a few weeks, or doing some work on the vehicle getting it ready for state inspection. I had a seizure at school, and was taken to the ER and was in the hospital for a week. After leaving the hospital, at my first appt. with my Neuro, I gladly gave him back my DL because I didn't even remember getting it. In case you can't tell, my memory is horrible. In this instance, I'm missing a huge chunk of time, and don't remember what I might have said or done while I was in this extended 'black-out'. If I had been in an accident, I wouldn't remember it. A few weeks ago, I had a seizure that brought me out of this 'memory coma' I was in. When the car and the DL issue came up, what could have happened scares the hell out of me. Right now, I can get rides to where I need to go, but if I can ever drive again, I didn't want something to happen that I had no memory of. The first thing that came to my mind was, 'Try telling that one to the jugde.'

Seruzies

I am confused about something. In Virginia the law states that if you have an aura that indicates that you are going to have a seizure then you can keep your DL. My Neurologist has told me not to drive but my family care physician says if the dmv has'nt sent me a letter and pulled it then legally I can drive. What are your thoughts on this?

kenster1

My Thought are don't drive. ultimately it's up to you. But, I used to live in California and as long as you took your meds and had been seizure free 6mos I think? (it's been so long now). you could drive. I used to get auras then too, so I thought everything would be fine. Then one day on my way home from work I had a partial seizure and blew through a red light (I still swear it was green) but that was probably the one a block earlier. witnesses say I never slowed down and hit one car pushing it through the intersection into another and that car hit another with the first car ending up in a parking lot on the other side of the intersection. Those people were hurt pretty badly the others wern't although one lady was pregnant I was driving a 64 chev pickup and broke the steering wheel with my face broke my arm and a couple ribs. and bent the frame of the truck. I've never driven since this has been 10years now loosing your independedence is lousy at first but with supportive friends and family it's not so bad if you live near public transportation it's even easier some states even offer dicount passes where I live now in Indiana we don't have public transportation so I bought a recumbant trike a sun EZ-3 21speed it's really cool. and my wife and I shop together she calls it date night. But taking the chance driving is not worth hurting or killing someone else or yourself!

I say we all get Hummers and then we can go over things instead of hitting them.

I get torn on the driving issue.  We aren't allowed to drive, yet if you drink under the alchohol limit, you can drive.  Teenagers cause most of the accidents..older people do too.  I've seen people talking on cell phones, doing their makeup and I saw some guy reading the paper at the lights.   What about sleep deprivation accidents? Why is it we get "targeted" yet these people get away with it all the time?  You have more of a chance of getting hit by those people than by someone having a seizure.

I understand having a seizure is a serious matter..don't get me wrong.  The thought of killing or seriously hurting someone makes me sick and we all have a responsibility to be safe and keep others safe.  But so do those people.  It's not fair that we get our licenses taken away, yet there are worse drivers than us out there.

crashl...

I crashed two trucks due to seizures One was a complete total. How I walk away was a miracle. The other one I went through a place of business and thank God nobody was standing there when my truck when crashing throughtheir showroom wall.
