Lamictal and Hair Loss

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced some hair lossor knows of a connection between hair loss and Lamictal? As i recently increased my dosage of Lamictal to 500mg a day, and i'm finding that i'm losing a lot more hair than usual especially when washing it. Any advice anyone can give me would be great!!!

Thanks Robyn.

Apparently, the dose,ie:the amount in mgs taken daily doesn't seem to matter. My wife has recently started on Lamictal for temporal seizing...She's taking 100mg/day and the hair loss is phenomenal.Quite literally,it comes out in large clumps.Interesting point;her hairdresser noticed this and said something was wrong as toxicity shows up in the hair first. She also has multiple sclerosis and is going in for an MRI to see if there is some relationship between the disease and the recent onset of seizing.

I understand the frustration of hair loss, but wasn't sure which medication was causing it.  I started using shampoo which makes the hair stronger, but that doesn't worker either.  I was at 400mg of Lamictal a day and now my neurologist put me at 500 last week.  Let's hope I don't go bald.  Hang in there.

belair...

I have been on Lamictal for a year.  The dose was increased 6 weeks ago.  A month ago my hair started coming out in clumps when I washed it.  I have started taking Biotin and using special shampoo and conditioners.

Has anyone had this hair loss problem slow down.  Lamictal is the only medicine that has worked for me.  Sometimes I feel like a guinea pig and don't really want to try "something else" to see what might work.

Vanity or Sanity?  I know it is a stupid question but, I am just trying to find answers and the Drs don't seem to have any.

I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Wow! Having the same issues, the itching was the first as it was getting worse and the hair proceeding to get worse coming out.I tried everything to thinking the drieness was ungodly so bad there was no control.

I have been on Lamical for about 1 1\2 yrs. along with other meds . My primary Dr. along with my Neurologist suggested (Betamethasone Dipropionate Lotion) yep! there is noway to pronouce it. its a clear lotion and I use it as needed, maybe (now once month) apparently my meds were drying out my scalp and causing the itch along with  hair loss. I would check with your dr. and just see what he or she said, can't hurt. good luck. this has been great for me.

also to add I take 200mg. x a day 400 daily

To anyone who is out there experiencing hair loss due to taking anti-seizure medication, try taking Centrum Silver (vitamin aisle at any drug store) once a day.  I lost more than half of my hair because of the Depakote I was taking.  Trust me, I had an unbelievable head of hair and I was actually thinking of getting a wig, extensions or whatever to hide the fact that I was losing hair.

I honestly didn't think it would work, but after taking one a day for about 3 weeks, my hair stopped falling out.  Before it was coming out in clumps and I wouldn't even put a comb through it.  So, try it, you never know.

Do you guys think a body wave would make our hair fall out even more?  We could try it.  Today my stylist cut my hair way short to make it look thicker.  Yeah right.  She wanted me to ask my doctor about it but I said I would ask you guys instead because the doctors don't have much to say in the first place.

I am on Lamictal and I have been told that all medications

can cause hair loss.

this makes a lot more sense

i realized for the past couple weeks that my hair has been falling out

i was wondering what the reason might be

because i eat healthy food

now i understand..

Hey guys, I actually had to register just because I felt the need to share this with everyone. Ok I was on 1000mg daily for 2 years of this stuff for bipolar disorder... A year after taking it I noticed I was cleaning out my hair brush a little more often, but I didn't think anything of it. 2 years later I am shampooing my hair and as I am combing my hair with my fingers to make sure the shampoo is out, I am taking out like mini clumps of hair. And I just recently told my doctor to shove it and I wasn't taking it anymore, and now that I am off it, I feel like my hair is coming out faster...? But here's the thing! I am a 20 year old female. Strange huh? I like screamed at my doctor, and was like "listen, I have a mental condition, but I am not stupid" I just want to let everyone know I am printing out this whole thing, and showing it to my doctor... Cuz a girl, who has enough problems to deal with should not have to deal with hair loss when she's 20 years old because doctors decide they have nothing better to do than to dope me up on an insane amount of medication that causes it, and didn't disclose it. I really think these doctors get a commission off these meds. I really do.... Thanks!

I have been on Lamictal for 9 mon. I started taking it after having a baby. I did loose some hair up front (basically up front but only on the sides) which is common after birth. That hair grew back. I am now taking 400mg a day and have noticed hair loss in the front middle on my head, from my hairline to about 3" back. I am thinking of getting off the Lamictal.

MY QUESTION IS: Those of you that are having hair loss, are you loosing it up front like me or all over?

My Dr said if it was the LAMICTAL she thought it would be and all over thing. She also said she thought it was more likely to make hair brittle and break rather than fall out.

I have been taking Lamictal for I don't know how many years.  It's always been in combintion with other drugs but the hair loss is constant.  Lamictal must be the one making my hair fall out.  My hair is thinning all over AND my hairline has receded horribly at the top and sides.  Someone suggested Biotin and multivitamins.  I just started so I don't know the outcome yet.  BUT it is so depressing.  I constantly look at other women's hair and see how thick and lovely their's are.  I'm going to my dr next week.  I'll see what he says.  He'll probably be as stupid as all the rest and say it's not a side effect when all of us are suffering from it.

I'm so glad I found this site.  I feel like I finally have proof that Lamictal is the cause of my hair loss.  I'm not even sure how long ago I was prescribed this drug, but I'm taking 300mgs a day.  I know it's been over a year, because I remember being upset last year on Mother's Day, because I was afraid that the hair loss was noticiable.

I started noticing my hair thinning out probably within a month of taking it.  I was really confused by this, because I actually had a mini hair transplant in the 90's.  My hair is thin all the way around, thanks to Mom, and I was young and insecure by it.  I went to see a specialist and he suggested I try a very small graft in the area that was concerning me and maybe the added thickness would alleviate my stress over it.  Wish I hadn't even bothered, as I now know that I didn't have a problem and just flushed my $$ away.  However, that hair is permanent, that is, until I started taking Lamictal.  The hair seemed to start thinning very quickly.  After a year of this, I knew something was off.  It seemed to even be too much for genetic hair loss.  It was quick and drastic.  I finally went to my general doc a few months ago and he ran every test known to mankind, and I was fine.  Thyroid, Lupus, everything.  I went to my dermatologist.  She did the same thyroid tests.  In fact, my thyroid is tested every year.  Fine.

I was suspicous of the Lamicatal in the very beginning of this, because I could really see that it was the only thing I had done differentely when the hair started falling out.  I thought maybe it was stress, but I don't believe that now.  I asked the doc who prescribes me this and he read the side effects out of the pharmacology book and said it wasn't a side effect.  I went home and searched it online, but I must have typed something else in, because I got very few hits, but there were sites that said this was a side effect.

I now have a spot in the front of my head, including my hair line, that is almost bald.  No exaggeration there.  This is more like alopecia.  The hair in my front hairline has actually fallen out.  I believed my doc at first and started using Rogaine.  I waited out the shedding period that you experience with this drug, but my hair loss has only increased.  There is NO new hair growing in that area.  I've now stopped the Rogaine as I realized this wasn't the problem or solution.

I believe it really is the Lamictal, and I'm wondering if the hair will grow back.  Again, keep in mind that I had permanent hair transplanted there and it is gone, so that's REALLY a good sign that something is happening.  I asked a specialist about the transplanted hair and that should NOT happen.  I'm starting to believe that the Lamictal is the only thing that can be causing this.  I don't know about you, but I'm calling my doc today and seeing about changing my meds.

I will keep coming here and post on my progress and see if my hair grows back.  Lamictal has been a really good drug for me all around, and I hate to stop taking it, but if there are other options out there, then I don't think the trade-off is worth it.  I want hair.

Im new to Lamictal and not seeing any problems yet but I have lost my hair twice due to medical issues and I used a shampoo/cond. combo called Nioxin, its a bit pricey but it strips junk from your hair and it really does help it regrow and thicken some and when you quit using it your hair wont fall back out like with Rogain and such, might wanna have them check your thyroid at your next check up, that can cause hair loss as well.

Good Luck!

Back 30 years ago when I started having seizures, my hair did not grow for almost 2 years. My Dr's at that time did not relate the two and had no belief what so ever that my epilepsy had anything to do with it.  My hair is still not any longer than my neck because it does not grow past there without getting to thick to manage.  I understand what you are going through.  I have been on every seizure drug their is with the exeception of maybe 2 and though I don't remember a loss of hair while on lamictal it does not mean it did not happen.  I truely believe that what your hair does is a mirror for your entire body.  I have seen this happen with people with other illness as well.  You need to shake these Dr's sometimes because many will see the hair loss as a small side effect and the the bigger problem that it is.

Hi Robyn! My name is Anna, I have always had a problem  with my hair falling out easily because it is very fine, but like you, I have noticed that since I have been  on Lamictal, it seems to be falling out more. I am 26 years old and am currently taking 500mg of Lamictal as well as  500mg of Phenytoin, and most recently, 2000mg of keppta. How much are you on? My doctors did not really have an answer for me when I asked.

I just came out of the hospital after having a video EEG.  The electrodes and glue pulled out a ton of hair.  I am losing a lot of hair from the Lamictal.  I feel that I am really going bald.   I know this is the least of my problem but I am REALLY upset by this.  Anyone have any suggestions.  I will try Brazil nuts as someone suggested.    Thanks.  Iam on 400 mg.

Roz NY

Just had the video eeg too.  I am on Lamictal 400 mg.  I use to have thick hair.  I can now see the shape of my head and it is shiny too.  I am wondering if this is worth it. I am so upset.  My doctor said he has not seen a connection between Lamictal and hair loss.  Do I really need meds for complex partials??  I hate this.  I know it is minor in the schemes of things but it is really making me miserable,

Roz NY

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus.  I have been on lamictal for about 9 months, currently at 500mg per day.  After about 6 months, I started to notice significant hair loss.  Will try the supplements and shampoo mentioned here.  Don't want to get off lamictal because, up until now, I'm not having any other side effects.

Hi Robyn, I'm sorry your losing your hair too I know how you feel. I'm on Topomax 400mg and started losing my hair a couple of months ago whilst I was increasing meds. Ive had every possible blood test and now they are going to send me for hormone tests as apparently this can have a lot to do with it. Although the package insert for the drug doesnt say hairloss the neuro looked up and advised it can cause hairloss and alopecia in some cases. I have been taking a hair supplement and special shampoos (Nourkin) but can't really say whether they are working, but its got to be doing some good. The hairdresser said its growing back but it is really falling out and I have long hair so if too much more falls out I could end up with a short haircut which I really don't want.
I didn't have this problem on Lamictal, but I did on Epilim. My neuro has suggested trying Keppra if it gets too bad but I didn't really want to go up that road and if these drugs don't work out for me then she thinks maybe brain surgery could be an option. I would think there is a connection for you in increasing the dose and the hairloss.
Its not nice your hair falling out, speak with your neuro perhaps they can suggest another med for you? bestwishes bex

Hello. I'm new to this site. I've been taking Lamictal for a year now. I take 150mg at night and 50mg in the morning. They increased it more about 6 months ago and ever since my hair has been falling out. Also when I wash it more comes out. I've asked 4 different doctors and they say they haven't heard about it doing that. I've read on the Lamictal Website that it CAN be a side effect. I had a doctor tell me that taking Selenium can help. I've tried that but haven't had any luck. Maybe it might help you. If you find anything that helps please let me know.
thanks,
Kelli

I've already lost everything else, why not my hair?

Seruzies

Hi Bruce and lemond, thanks for your replies.

I was seizure free up until a few months ago, and after having a grand mal seizure on new years day i went back to see my neuro.  We suspected that the return of the seizures could have something to do with going off the birth control pill, that the lamictal may have come to rely on it, as i was on it for quite a while. So my neuro told me to go back on the pill and give it 4 weeks and then see if the seizures have stopped.

I think that the stress my body is under at the moment may (hopefully) be the cause of my hair loss, but because my dosage of lamictal has never been as high as 500mg before, as previously i was only on 300mg, i'm wondering if increasing the med has caused my body to react in this way!!!

But thanks for getting back to me!

Robyn.

Hi Robyn,

I am new to this site and have never posted before. I just wanted to say that I am on Lamictal, same dosage as yourself, and do loose my hair, especially when washing it.
Not sure that its the medication as like someone else has said its not in the leaflet.
It hasn't worries me as it always comes back and I had it MUCH worse on another medication that I used to be on, Epilim. Handfuls of hair all the time!!!! So as I say not sure if it is that but your not on your own I'm there with you :)

P.S Have you heard of Epilim nobody seems to have mentioned it anywhere on this site.

Hello Robyn,

I am losing my hair! I began taking Lamictal in the summer of 05,I became pregnant in Dec of 05, and my hair only got thicker  I have always had a huge unimaginable amount of hair. according to my stylist three times the normal. I often fantaszied about losing about half of my hair. Now i have lost about 2/3's nobody feels I am sincere. "you have plenty of hair." is what they say! I am ok with the loss but will I go bald is my concern?  my hair comes out in clumps but I am not able to get validation or even talk about it, because my sister has just finished round four of chemo therapy and has no hair. I don't want to be vain. but If I go bald heaven help me!

I honestly don't miss all that hair. I just don't want to lose it all

I began taking vitamins this past few days, the same I took when pregnant. today is day number three but vitamins make me hyper and I have been really tense and stressed and need to stop the vitamins.I took flinstones chewables during pregnancy so I dropped it to half . still makes me jittery. I guess I am in a no win situation. My friend told me tonight about the hair loss from lamictal. I knew there had to be an answer. I am truly sorry we all are going through this, but at least we have validation. that must account for something?

 Warm regards,

Robin with an I

Robyn,I'm on 500 mg per day of lamictal. I just went up from 400. I don't have any problem with hair loss from the lamictal, but have had with other drugs. I've been on Lamictal for about 3 yrs now with basically good results. Although, the thing with drugs and the mysterious human body, everyone reacts differently to drugs.Good luck,Lemond
lemond

Robyn,

Right now I'm on 150mg of lamictal, but also 750mg of keppra. I've been on lamictal since Sept 1997 and don't have any problems of loosing hair. On the information chart I have, it doesn't show hair loss as being one of the side effects.

All I can think of now is for you to bring it up with your doctor.

BTW, with the dosage amount that you're on now, has it controlled your seizures any better?

Hi my son is 14 and diagonsised with JME in Dec 2007.  He is on 1500mg Depakote Er and it is working great.  Only problem he started losing his hair last month.  Is this temporary?  Will it grow back?  How long does it last?  Will he go bald?  I don't want to stop Depakote because so far it is working fine for him -- except his hair which is a big thing when you are 14

dmtbgt

I have been on Depakote for almost a year.  I lost A LOT of hair when I first started taking it.  I am no longer losing hair and it's starting to grow back (I have crazy bits of hair that stick up all over if I don't spray it down).  I'm not sure if I've just gotten used to the meds or if it's that I am now taking a multivitamin.  I was told that a one-a-day would help.  The hair loss slowed about a month or so after taking the one-a-day.  I feel for you and your son.  Dealing with a diagnosis like that is hard enough... then you add in all the side effects of the meds.  It can be really stressful... I know exactly what you're going through.  heather

hlpotts

I was on depakote a few years ago, I guess quite a few years... I went through hair loss on that also, I also used nioxin then, and took zinc and a one a day vitamin ( not sure if any of that helped), take zinc w/ food or it will make you throw up.  On the bright side, I never got bals, and it did start coming back and came back as thick as it was before only curly.  That is a side effect of depakote.  Now I am on lamictal and I am going through the hair loss again.  I have been on it for 3 years and was saved last year when I became pregnant  it quit falling out and grew back in... but now I've had my healthy baby and my hair is falling out again. :(   Using nioxin again, taking folic acid and a prenatal... so far it is still falling out...  Lamictal also gives me night sweats...  Good luck w/ your 14 year old, I've had it since I was in 5th grade... I'm now 30... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but it is still a struggle, seems like it should be minor if it controls it.. but hard to cope with... Best wishes for health and hair.  Jen

Forgot to ask .... what are good supplements?  What is a good shampoo?  Should he wash his hair less -- he's very athletic and takes a shower every day.

Hi All,

I was diagnosed with Epilepsy in February of this year. I am currently taking 150mg of Lamictal. I have been experiencing significant hair loss since then. I also stopped taking the pill as I was advised it would not work. So I think a combination of stopping the pill and taking Lamictal has caused the hair loss. Do any of you know if it is safe to use Nourkrin? I have been advised that there are so many alternative medications that you should not take as it may affect my epilepsy, ie Evening Primrose oil etc. Please advise as I am quite anxious about this. Kind regards,Sarah
