Women With Epilepsy

Want to hear a funny one? I have had epilepsy since 1967. In 1978 I got married (I was on Dilantin & phenobarbital)got pregnant and had an unharmed baby girl. I have large ugly protruding ears and I was glad she didn't. The reason she had no defects was because I was on the Pill my first trimester which future research has shown my Dilantin & this counteract each other. I had three more pregnancies but all had severe birth defects due to my meds. My doctor didn't want me to try again but I had researched birth defects. I knew phenobarbital only caused minor birth defects like cleft lip/palate. My doctor raised my dose of this to high level for my seizures. I got pregnant again and nine months later had a baby by. Upon delivery the doctors/nurses shielded him from my view and tried to comfort me as they sadly told me he had a severe cleft lip and palate. My only reaction was "yeah but what about his ears?? Future surgeries corrected thi he is a quite a handsome 31 year old man. And he has told me he too is glad he doesn't have my ears! Now ther are many new anti-seizure drugs which will not harm a fetus at all. No women should have fears about having a wonderful child of their own. Talk to your neurologist and he will help you choose the best way. Please try it and see!

Barb- First off after the body adjusts meds don't affect you this way. Phenobarb is and has been used for neuro problems and animals respond well to this. The side effects are not that bad, if your dog's seizures are controlled be thankful.I've tried all types of meds over 45 yrs  none worked for my daily partials but I just started another. Whatever drug works to help you is great. and side effects are better than seizures.I was lucky to have two kids back then when there were not the great new drugs which do not hurt a fetus.  I hope your seizures are controlled but if not try another med.
