Will my medicine now affect my chance of pregnancy in the future?

Tue, 04/14/2015 - 00:46

I am 23 years old, have been living with epilepsy since I was 17 years old. I started out with a pediatric neurologist and moved over to an adult neurologist when I turned 18. My first seizure I spent a few days in the hospital & it does not run in my family nor could they find a reason to why I had a seizure. One year later and I had another seizure confirming I had epilepsy. My doctor started me out on a low dose of a generic form of Keppra (Levetericatem) at about 50mg a day. Over the years, every time I had a seizure either forgetting to take it or having a breakthrough seizure they would raise my medicine which then became morning and night pills. I am at 3,500mg a day. One and a half in the morning and two at night. My seizures only happen when I am severly stressed out (finals/midterms), not sleeping well, and they only happen when I'm sleeping late at night after 11:30pm.

What I went on this forum for is to ask about how my medicine will affect me and I ever want to become pregnant in the future. Most of my friends are in nursing, pharmaceutical, or firefighting school. They ask what medicine I am taking and most have informed me that my medicine is in category C. I'm worried that as I get older, I will be terrified of passing this potential problem to my children. Having a miscarriage or having a seizure during pregnancy or during childbirth. I wanted to know if you had to change medicine yourself if you have epilepsy and any other information from this.

I have asked my doctor about this and they stay kind of quiet about it because they know I'm not potentially looking to be pregnant now. But I would like to know a lot of information before I scare myself about it.

WelcomeAt least you are thinking ahead and wanting information. The best person to discuss this with is your neurologist. He/she could tell you more and help you understand more. JUst let them know that you are wanting to protect your child.I hope the keppra is doing what is was created to do. I have been using it for 10+ years and I will not stop takin it without knowing the newer medication will work better. Besides Doc wouldn't let me since he knows how long it took us to gt my seizures controlled as well as they are today. Good luck and please come back and let us know how things are going Joe
