Will it ever be a good idea?

Sat, 02/20/2016 - 18:49

I had 3 large seizures the week of my first menstrual cycle when I was 13 years old. The doctors then decided that hormones were increasing seizure activity and placed me on birth control. So, the ultimate question for me today is: will I ever be able to have children or should I stay on birth control for the rest of my life? The decision was made very early on that brith control was good and I do not know much about a life without it. Clearly, I cannot get pregnant with it and may have more seizures without it. So, will it ever be a good idea for me to have a child?

It all comes down to what

It all comes down to what drugs you are taking. If you are not on any but the Pill you could start one before going off for seizures. There are many anti-seizures drugs which will not harm the fetus. Back in1979 I was on the Pill & taking Dilantin but got pregnant anyway and had an unaffected baby girl. Ten years later it was shown that the Pill and Dilantin counteract each other. In between I had one stillborn with severe defects & two misses-all attributed to my Dilantin. I read that phenobarb caused cosmetic defects and did not affect the brain. I raised my level went off Dilantin and had a baby boy in 1984 . He had a cleft lip/palate which surgeries corrected. Now you have many choices you can/will have the child you want. Consult your neuro and he will help. Many happy days to follow just like me!
