Taking depakote but want more kiddos...help!!!

Sun, 02/01/2015 - 02:08

Hey everyone! I have lived with epilepsy since I was 10 and am now 27...that being said, I was originally prescribed depakote when I was younger. I had no break-through seizures or anything. When I became "a woman of childbearing age," in the words of my doc, he wanted to change my meds to something that wouldn't have as high a birthdefect rate, and switched me to Trileptal. That seemed.to work until after I had my first kiddo 2 1/2 years ago (he was perfectly healthy and had 10 fingers and toes too!). After he was born, my seizures increased to a total of 6 breakthrough seizures in less than 2 years. After changing my meds around numerous times, I flat out otld my doc that I wanted to be put back on depakote because at that point I was trying to keep myself safe and knew that I shouldn't get prego while taking it.

My main question is that I still want to have more kiddos and am wondering if surrogacy is an option? Are my eggs damaged because of my meds? Also, what is the maximum dosage (if any of you know) that can be taken for no birth defects to occur? I know no meds is better, but for my health, it's necessary.

All my friends are having babies (again, and without me this time!), and I'm realizing just how much I still want another one of my own! HELP!!!

I read your post and understand your concern. A question I might ask is have you discussed this issue with your neurologist and asked about other medicatins being used to control seizures. I know and have taken both depakote and trileptol. Both are good medications. I also know that hey have been used since the early 1980's. As the body changes dosages need to be adjusted. You can fine all kinds of posts in women section. No break thru seziures until their time of moth. All I am saying is your body gets used to medications and dosages need to be increased and decreased. I also know that the seizures I have now and seconds in length. Compared to the minutes they werwe when I was taking both of the medications you posted. There are more medications that have been brought out and more are being created which control seizures they also have fewer side effects.
