Lamictal and Mirena combination experiences

Sun, 12/20/2015 - 03:22

When I was deciding what birth control to get, I had a very limited selection because Lamictal and any form of estrogen are never compatible.  The majority of birth control options will cut Lamictal levels in half, which is why us ladies on this AED need to be very careful.  I decided to try the Mirena, which is a progesterone based IUD.  Progesterone and Lamictal don't interact with each other as much, so this seemed like a good way to go. The progesterone is isolated in the uterus as well, so very little of the hormone is introduced into the blood stream.

I was extremely happy with the Mirena.  My levels were unaffected, and I did NOT gain any weight.  I'm on 300 mg of Lamictal in the morning and 300 mg of Lamictal in the evening, and my seizures remained under control the whole entire time I was on the Mirena.  For me it was a great option.  I removed it after five months however because the synthetic progesterone was making me shed quite a bit of hair, which in the end wasn't worth it for me to keep it in.

I was paranoid and searched for hours at a time for women and Mirena/Lamictal combinations before I got it inserted, but in the end it all depends on how your body processes the birth control.  I was very happy on it.  I'm hoping this post helps out women like me who were looking for success stories online to get the reassurance to try out the Mirena.

Shout out to any other women on here who also want to share their Mirena/Lamotrigine experience as well!
