Future pregnancy and epilepsy

Wed, 03/15/2017 - 10:32
I was diagnosed with absent seizures about 2 years ago, I was placed on 150mg of Keppra and now I am on Topamax for my migraines as well. My husband and I have decided that we want to start a family in the near future and I and nervous that this medication I am on will harm the baby. I have an appointment with my neurology doctor today and I will be going over all of this with but but I would like comments, suggestions from those who have been there before. Will i have to see a high risk Ob-gyn? Which medication is better Keppra or Tompamax? I would only like to be on one to lower the change of birth defects. How often will i see both my neurologist and my OB, will I have to have more blood work and Ultra sounds than "normal" pregnant woman? Sorry for the long post. If I have missed anything that will help answer these questions please ask. I appreciate any and all advise.

Hi, I'm going through the

Hi, I'm going through the exact same thing now, I had a rare reaction to keppra a couple of years ago so had to be taken off it....after a recent visit to my neurologist the other day my understanding is keppra is fine during pregnancy there are no studies to show that it causes any complications of any kind...epilim is very bad! And topiramate is somewhere in between that's why they ideally don't like giving it to women of child bearing age. There are studies which shows it causes complications but they class everything from a cleft lip to severe disabilities as a complication. I'm awaiting the exact studies to show the % risk...yet after doing a bit of digging of my own it seems plenty of women on a similar dose to myself (150mg) have had children on the drug just fine and apparently the studies use a MUCH higher dose ... hope this helps and hope you get more answers from your neurologist when you see him...if you're anything like me I know your head will be spinning with decisions...good luck ( and again sorry for the long post ) x

I have been on keppra XR for about 15 years.  I took 1500mg of keppra on my first pregnancy an 2500mg during my second pregnancy,  I had to take extra folic acid before i started trying and monitor monthly my levels.  They also switched me to the brand name when i was pregnant.  I had two normal pregnancies and no issue.  I also have two healthy children.  Keppra is also safe to breastfeed with if you chose to do so. I breastfed my second child.  Just realize though when they do raise it.  Sometimes you will feel a little dizzy or tired but besides that i had no problems

I don't know about Topamax,

I don't know about Topamax,  but I took 500mg of Keppra XR brand name throughout my pregnancy with my 3rd kiddo. She'll be 2 in October and she's just perfect. Ornery as ever, but that's just in her genes;) I had to see my neurologist about 2 weeks before my due date, but I delivered about a week prior to my appt with her, but I think she just wanted to do a blood level check for Keppra. It took a lot for us to make a decision while I was taking medication too. I was worried about all of the same stuff as you. But, I wasn't going to be getting off meds any time soon and we didn't want to wait any longer! Best of luck to you!
