epilepsy and birth control pills

I have right TLE, and for the most part it's controlled. Though I've noticed that around the time of my period I experience seizure "symptoms" -- jerks/spasms when I'm tired, lights bother me a whole lot more (even regular light bulbs). Even though my seizures are fairly controlled normally, I'm more prone to seizures during this time. Sometimes I have an aura, but without a seizure following it. I don't usually have other hormonal issues associated with my period, but since I tend to have more trouble with seizures around my period, I've been thinking about taking birth control. I asked my neurologist about it recently and she said research is mixed as to whether it's effective or not. Since I've also had problems with meds interacting with seizure meds in the past, I'm cautious to take anything new, though if hormones are making seizures worse, it could make sense. Has anyone taken birth control to help with seizure symptoms during periods? Did it help? and more importantly, did it interact with seizure meds? Thank you.

From what I've read, certain meds can either "cancel out" or "by canceled out by" the *Pill*. That's probably why your neuro was skeptical. There ARE other forms of BC that I've read had helped some people (the Depo shot, NuvaRing, IUDs) on this site. Try searching "Catamenial Epilepsy" on this site, it's what period-related epilepsy is called. Good luck!
