Doctors: Hormones Do cause seizures in Women!

Fri, 05/06/2016 - 13:19
It is time we demand that Neurologists treat Epilepsy in women differently than they do in children and men. One out of every 2 women with epilepsy will have elevated seizure activity during the hormonal changes of their menstrual cycle: 1 out of every 2 = 50% of us are at high risk of seizure activity twice a month when our progesterone drops, and I am just learning this now after 6 yrs of telling my long-time, female Neurologist that I believe my seizure activity was increasing because of my hormones. I am now 44. I have epilepsy from a major concussion I had at 5, my seizures began probably around puberty (hormones) and they came and went throughout the yrs: but looking back and connecting the dots I can see that I was likely not seizing during times I was on the pill. After the birth of my first child, I had the merena IUD for 4 yrs and I had no seizures. I had the IUD removed, became pregnant with my second child, went back on merena & had another 4-5 yrs seizure free. Note: while I was pregnant I was on only 200mg Carbatrol a day and no seizures, which I assume was because my progesterone was up from the pregnancy. After my 2nd IUD, I then decided to have my tubes tied. Huge error on my part. That is when my seizures & auras started hitting me every 11 days like clockwork. It has been going downhill ever since, as I mentioned, for almost 6 years now. My last appointment with my "Doctor" was over 2 months ago And I yet again relayed all of this concern and asked if my hormones had anything to do with what was happening to me. She told me "no" and increased my med dose again. Dr V has had me on 4 different meds in the last 2 yrs, all of which have only made me either fat, stoned or both and every time I see her she passive aggressively accuses me of not taking them (which my blood levels prove otherwise) on top of this she has suggested I see a Psychiatrist to handle the stress and mood changes. I do need to see a Psychiatrist, but only to undo how crazy my Doctor has made me feel via her treatments and/or lack thereof. The last straw was the other day I looked at my medical chart online and the notes my Doctor had written in my chart. At just about every appointment she claims that "stress and missing medication doses" have caused my seizures. Nowhere did she once state my concern about my cycle or that this happens every 11 days. I don't know why she has done this: money, kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies, a massive ego? Regardless, she has put myself and my family in jeopardy and I am seeing a new Doctor next month. I will take control of my treatment this time, not the other way around. I encourage any and all women with epilepsy to take note of their condition in relation to their menstrual cycles and to get help from a good, caring Doctor if you see a correlation.
