Catamenial epilepsty CAN be controlled!

Mon, 06/22/2015 - 16:56

I am now 59, and have had catamenial seizures since I was 15.  They stopped in 2002.  I have been seizure free (except on seizure in 2012 where I forgot my medication for 13 years.  How I was cured was quite unexpected.  I had an an ovarian cyst.  My doctor, not wanting to do invasive seizure, suggested low dose birth control pills.  Not only did that cure the cyst, but along with lamictal (Keppra now) and clonazepam, I became seizure free.  My doctor couldn't believe, and my gynecologist said it was nonsense.  But when I went off the pills (now they are progerteron only) I had the worst seizure ever.  Because I was over 50, my GP and gynecologists insisted I must be off birth control pills.  But facts are facts.  I have gone through menopause and I'm still taking brith control pillls.  This doesn't work for every woman, but if you have tried everything, you might give it a shot.  I was told that that was a one in million occurrence, although I think that inaccurate.  After all, progresterone alone IS in and of itself anti-seizure medicine.  Why shouldn't it control seizures.  Can you argue with 13 years being seizure free?  Good luck to all women suffering with this nightmare.
