Son, 16 wet bed, on Depakote

Mon, 09/11/2006 - 13:13
Hi my son who is 16 and just diagnosed with seizures is on Depakote. He wet his bed last night but doesn't think he had a seizure because he says he woke right up and realized what he was doing. It seems odd to me though. Last week he had his dose upped because he had two seizures (grand mals) in one day. Could the Depakote be affecting him?

Have you phoned his doctor to ask about the bedwetting? Medications affect people differently. My 15 year old daughter is on Depakote (500 mg)also and she has had no problems as far as that is concerned. She also has grand mal seizures. Of course I would ask his doctor. The affects may be different for boys than girls. Good luck with your son. Shanna

If it continues I will. It has happened only once but if there is a pattern I will definetly ask her. My son takes 2000 mgs of Depakote, which seems like alot to me but he was still having seizures when taking 1500 mg. He must metabolize them fast. When did your daughter start having them? Just curious as this whole thing is new to us and I'm scared for my son. Thanks, Laura.

I am currently on depakote, and I have never had a problem with bedwetting. I have been on and off this medicine for over 10 years. The only problems that I have with it are hair loss, weight gain and stomach problems. I was on 2000 mg at one time. Loss of bladder control is a symptom of a seizure, a lot of times during a grand mal seizure there is loss of bladder control. Embarrasing yes, but it happens. I wouldn't worry about your son. I had a lot of seizures when I was sixteen, and the doctors thought that puberty may have made them worse! How long has your son been on depakote? I found that my side effects (hair loss tiredness etc) subsided about 3-4 months after being on it...
