Is My Epilepsy Going Away?

Wed, 01/24/2007 - 14:56
Hi my name is Taylor and I am 19, I have been with Epilepsy since I was 14 or 15 I can’t remember J. I was wondering if there are any statistics on the possibility of out-growing epilepsy. And if I was out growing epilepsy how can I tell? Epilepsy has left me bitter and cold or so I’ve been told, and the older I get. I have become less and less optimistic about life it self. So the very thought about growing out of epilepsy is an interesting prospect.

Wow. Literally i am in the exact same situation. Same age diagnosed, same age now, same feelings, and i've heard the same rumors of outgrowing it. My seizures are under control and for that i'm thankful. But if i miss my evening dose of medicine i'm practically guranteed to have a grand mal in the morning. I mentioned something to my doctor (Dr. Kanner from RUSH University in Chicago), and it is true that you can grow out of it. I'm 19 also so i'm almost completely mature, but you're not done maturing physically until your early 20's. He said I would be on medication for the rest of my life, and thats completely fine with me. I would just rather know i grew out of it so i'm not constantly worried in the morning. It's terrible and i hate it. It seems like its consuming my life i worry so much. It's ruined relationships, hopes, and dreams for me. Now the only hope i have is that i grow out of this. So i wish the best of luck to you, cause i know what you're going through and its terrible.

My wife has had epilepsy since she was a teenager.  We hoped she would grow out of it, but she didn't.  At age 23 she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that was causing her seizures.  She just had the tumor removed about 3 years ago and has been seizure free ever since.  The success rate of the surgery to eliminate siezures is about 80% is what we were told.  We have found, even before the surgery, that the most important thing is to fully understand what you are going through.  You get better and better dealing with it.  Life still goes on.  My wife has had 2 healthy girls.

She just published a book titled "Piece of Mind" by Deanna Brady.  I think it would be well worth your time to read it.  She is very open about the struggles she had and how she overcame them.

It is available at Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com.

ahh hello friend!
I too was diagnosed with epilepsy when i was 15 years old- i've had a few grand mal seizures, but thats the only kind i've ever experienced! I've been taking keprra, and was seizure free for two years (i'm 19 now) until just a few days ago, i didn't get enough sleep and ended up having a seziure. i completely understand the emotion struggles that go along with epilepsy... considering thats all i've been experiencing since last wednesday. but i want to encourage you in faith. i dont know where you stand with believing in God, or praying for healing, but i want to encourage you to go to him. God- is so big, he's limitless, though sometimes we try to put human limitation on him. I dont believe people quite understand what God can do, if you get the chance to grab a Bible or google some scripture.. please do. Because your eyes, and heart will be opened to such a divine romance. Your a child of the king, and this epilepsy, it has no place in you, and its got no place in me, and i have faith that if we keep giving it up to God and trust in him for our healing, we will see that day, no matter what anybody has ever told you. He loves you. and he wants you whole, complete, healed, and a warrior in his name. i cant tell you why we ended up with this, or why God hasnt healed us yet, but i do know that a lot is accomplished in the "waiting" the only way to get refined is to go through the fire.. and its hard, and it sucks, but if you trust him, i assure you he will not let you down. I'm not promising God will heal you because i dont know his plan for your life, but i do want to encrouage you to ask. In the scripture when Jesus approached the blind man he says "what do you need healing for?" Jesus knew the man was blind! he couldve just healed him! but he didnt, he didnt because he wanted the man to ask him... so when the man finally said "JESUS I'M BLIND AND YOUR THE ONLY WAY THAT I CAN BE WELL AGAIN"... Jesus healed them man. Or if you read about the woman who had an issue concerning blood... she faught her way through a crowd to get to Jesus and finally touched them hem of his gaurmet and when he looked at her he said "daughter.. your faith has made you well" in other words "child because you have faith in me, you are healed!" He  is so good. and dont ever stop believing that. Dont ever stop acknowledging how much he loves you. this world is bad, its wicked, thats why life is hard, but God is good, and he wants only the best for you. i really hope none of these words offended you, im only meaning it for encouragment,, this is whats helped me stay strond and secure: knowing my identity is in Christ, and him alone. You were made to live, for something to die for beloved. make this life worthwhile, dont live for today, dont live according to your epilepsy, ask God, cry out and say "GOD WHERE DO YOU WANT ME? WHAT DO I DO" i assure you that if your walking in his will, no matter how many seizures you might have, it wont matter. it wont matter because your not living your life for you anyway, your living it for someone else. Bless you! I'm praying for you and your situation!
