juvenile epilepsy and drinking

Sun, 12/11/2011 - 11:30

Hello. I have juvenile epilepsy. I had a grand mal seizure almost 4 years ago. I was put on keepra 1000mg and I have been seizure free since then. I am very complient with my medication. I haven't had any grand mal seizure since then. The only little thing i have is the random eye fluttering which only happens once a month, if even that. This only occurs if I get extremely tired. I usually go to bed around 11pm or even earlier just to make sure I dont have those. Othe then that I am fine. However, I was never told about drinking. One doctor I had which i no longer go too didn't mention it and then this new doctor i go to is telling me I can never even touch a drink. I haven't had a seizure so I find this hard to believe. His assistant said I could have one drink. I am really confused now on what I can do. Since I am complient with my medication and have been seizure free 4 years in Jan. can I drink? and I am not talking about getting drunk but I would not mind having a drink or 2. No more then that though.

Any help would be great.

http://www.epilepsy.com/EPILEPSY/PROVOKE_ALCOHOL

Remember every person's body is different as to what meds they take, everyone seems to be a different case.  It seems like everyone has a diffent type of epilepsy and different med or combo of meds.  And each person reacts differently and might have different side effects, etc.

Just be careful, if you do have a drink make sure you're with someone that knows and cares about you & especially educated in seizure first aid.  Be smart.

God bless & have a wonderful holiday season :)

If ur on anti seizure medications I wouldn't drink if I were you, Its not just that you could have a seizure , its that alcohaul can react with the medication and cause problems, even death, although it depends what medications you are on. Anti - Seizure meds are pretty serious. I dont drink and Im on anxiety medications Im even scared itll react with it. Has anyone seen the commercial where a man goes to the pharmacy and picks up his meds and the pharmacist says " Your son will take this to a party, give some to his girlfriend who will then drink some alcohaul , start convulsing than have a cardiovascular collapse" ? its something along those lines. Im not saying your going to have a cardiovascular collapse, but im just thinking that its not worth the risk.

heey, i definitely know how you're feeling! although i have experimented i know my body can handle 2 drinks! i'm on tegretol and haven't had a seizure in 6 years! just have a little drink and see how you feel, because alcohol definitely lowers the seizure threshhold thingy ahha, i get auras when i drink, but nothing happens :)
