how to deal

Thu, 07/06/2006 - 23:31
I'm 16 and suffer from seizures, but have only had 2 so far. I just had my first one almost 2 years ago, so it was definately something new for me to deal with. Sometimes, I feel like I'm not a normal teenager, because I can't experience normal teenage things, like going to parties and maybe having like 2-3 beers because drinking can trigger a seizure, so I was writing this to see if any other teenagers kind of feel the same way, and how they cope with kind of "not feeling like a normal teenager". Thanks. :D

Hi my name is Gina and I am also 16 years old. I have had epilepsy since I was 8 months old and there have been some pretty ruff times in my life with having this disease. Like when I was in 3rd grade and I had to get brain surgery on my head. I had to get surgery b because I had a tumor in my head. Don't worry all of these years I have been trying to fit in a big friends group at school but it has never really worked for me. I just have a few really good friends and I am mostly into doing crafts and hanging out with my neighbores and sometimes school teachers. Do you get to drive. I don't because my seizures are too bad even though I only have complex partial seizures where my face turns red, and gets pulled up I can't think and sometimes I even start laughing. I sometimes wish taht I could drive. That's what I feel very out of place about. Just remember there is something special about everyone you just have to find it. you can email me when ever you want. take care from Gina

I am not a teenager, I am 25, but I want to give a bit of advice... drinking and partying is not worth the possible side effects you could suffer as a result of seizing just because you want to party with friends... you can have fun but know what your personal limits are with what this disease/your medication allows... the things your body goes through when you have seizures are serious... I know not feeling normal sucks, believe me, I have been and still am there... but you have your whole life ahead of you... and you have to think about that! see this topic... http://my.epilepsy.com/?q=node/963518 good luck. Kristin
