Can it go away?

Sun, 05/06/2007 - 19:16
Hi... I was diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy in October, and it totally was nothing I could have ever expected or been ready for. Remembering to take my medication every 12 hours has been a struggle. The thing about medication is I know theres a lot of things that don't work well with it, such as alcohol, birth control, or even being pregnant one day. I know I am young, and that it's a bit early to think of this, but I don't want something to be wrong with my kids! I think in the future, and I want to know, does epilepsy ever settle? is it something that ur body might grow out of? The fact that I didn't have my first seizure until I was 15 makes me think that it might disappear again, will it? Am I going to be on seizure meds until the day that I die?

Hi, You didn't say exactly how old you were, or which medication(s) you are taking. I wish I could be more positive but your condion might clear up or it might last a life time. Im not a doctor, but you might find depakote would help you. You might also find the vns would afford you some relief.

It always feels crazy when you find out that you or a loved one has been diagnosed with anything. My son was diagnosed with a seizure disorder back in 2000, he is 8 years old now. We have been through so many things in the past years, and what has worked for my son is Alternative Methods. Over the years I have gotten him on a good diet, (no processed foods, fresh fruits and vegi's - it's the Spacific Carb. Diet and it's GREAT!) and then about 9 months ago we started him on acupuncture, he is almost seizure free and we are looking at weaning him off his meds soon. Before starting him with acupuncture he was having about 40+ seizures a month, Not to mention he wasn't talking could bearly walk, couldn't focus, his school said he was regressive, the list goes on. Now he is chatting up a storm, running and playing and getting good marks in school. I don't know what your paticular Diagnosis is, but people do grow out of seizure disorders, it doesn't mean that you will always have this or take meds for the rest of your life. I guess my message would be try acupunture, or some other natural way, my one regret for my son is that I wish I had started this as soon as he was diagnosed, I didn't know about it and now I'm hoping that I can help you and anyone else that will listen. This really does work, sometimes it could be a deficiancy in something your body is suppose to have, I'm just saying look into natural cures, even if they truely didn't work you would be healthier for trying. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

It's ok to think about all of that. It's entirely natural for you to be scared and freaked out. Just be patient and you will get adjusted. There are a number of epileptologists out there working on specifically womens issues. They have some doctors at Beth Israel / Deaconess Hospital in Boston, who are interested in epilepsy and pregnancy. You might contact their neurology staff, or ask your doctor, for someone who specializes in women's issues and epilepsy. You might have seizures all your life, but I hope that your seizures go away. You will get used to taking your meds at a regular time. I don't drink at all, and sometimes wish I could have a beer or something, but no one thinks the worse of me for ordering a Coke (although at the bar they are very expensive!!!) Just take things as they come, and find a good epileptologst. If you feel good on your medication right now, that is a HUGE thing! If you are not having any seizures that is even better. If you have any problems in school, let your teachers know what is going on and discuss it with your doctor.
