Which hospital for left frontal lobe surgery?

Mon, 08/31/2015 - 17:12

Hello all, this is my first time posting to this forum. I am turning here for advice on selecting a hospital based on first hand experience from anyone that has had a similar proceedure as out son will have (left frontal lobe cortical dysplasia / tumor removal).

Our 5 year-old-son has epilepsy (diagnosed in 2012) and is experiencing partial seizures that are not controlled by medicine.  His neurologist has advised us to choose a hospital for surgery pre-testing as soon as possible. Our son's seizures have an established focal point (left frontal lobe) which has been substantiated by VEEG, EEGs and MRIs over the past 3 years. An MRI earlier this month showed a slight change to the lesion (focal point) from the last MRI and indicated a "bubbly" appearance suggestive of a tumor. In the past the lesion was thought to be cortical dysplasia. With the change in the lesion and the uncontrolled seizures, we are looking to move forward with surgery pre-testing.

If anyone has researched hospitals, let alone for your child, it is not exactly an easy task. There are too many, there are too many delays in responce, etc. We have narowed it down to the following, not in any order of preference:

1) Nicklaus Children's Hospital (formerly Miami Children's Hospita)

2) Boston Children's Hospital

3) Cleveland Clinic Childrens Hospital

4) Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

Thank you for any help you can provide with this choice.

I would also consider Tampa

I would also consider Tampa General hospital.  The Neurosurgeon, Dr. Vale, is great.  I am soon going to be getting LTL surgery there soon.  They have done this on children as young as 6 but have said they could do it on children much younger. But as Jazz said you have to be comfortable with your team.  Good Luck.
