Taking care of oneself after Surgery

Mon, 04/04/2011 - 20:22
I am trying to decide whether or not to have surgery.  I have a question for those that have had surgery.  Are you able to take care of yourself after surgery or do you need assistance?  I am not married and have no family in my area that can help.

I fared OK by myself and have detailed my experiences here:

It might have been a quicker recovery with somebody to wait on me hand and foot, but the peace and quiet was good too!

I appreciate the information.  I agree with you,  only the person that is having the surgery can decide if they should have it.

when I was finally released from the hospital after my brain surgery, I had my father stay with me for a few days afterwards.  It was nice to spend the time with my father, but I'm pretty certain I could have taken care of myself.  Just a fair warning my doctors didn't give me, is that there is a chance (not a certainty) of psychotic episodes after having a brain surgery, as brain surgery is a traumatic brain injury.  No, it's not fliying into a brick wall after a car accident, but having a piece of your brain removed is a traumatic thing for your brain, and there are somewhat severe side effects I wish I had been warned of such as : impulsiveness, depression, psychosis and the list goes on and on, I recommend doing some light research on traumatic brain injury before your surgery.  I regret having mine, even though my seizure activity is signifigantly decreased, the little activity that is present causes me suicidalness and depression.  And over time, the suicidal ideation has progressed to suicide attempts, which even though I think that's unacceptable, I'm not entirely behind the wheel anymore.  HOWEVER, I have a friend whom has had the same surgery, and he has not had so much as an aura since, and is happy and sane and living a wonderful life now, so don't let my problems dissuede you, as the odds are small.  Just be prepared to have a counselor and or psychologist when you return
