Lesionectomy questions

Fri, 01/11/2013 - 14:13

Hi,

I'm 29 years old, I was diagnosed with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy when I was 21. My doctor has tried me on pretty much every medication out there and it keeps the major seizures under control, but I still have frequent complex partials. I had a VNS implanted three years ago, but that didn't help. After a lot of testing, a specialist believes he's narrowed the cause of the seizures to a lesion on my left temporal lobe, and they're suggesting surgery. They believe there's a 40% chance of total seizure freedom, with a further 30% chance of at least improving the seizures. On the other hand there's a 1% chance of making the seizures worse.

There are other risks too; a 20% risk of damage to my verbal memory is the main one, but there's also a risk of damage to vision in my right eye, maybe 1 in 10, and a small risk of paralysis down the right side of my body, about 1%.

So  I'd like to hear if anyone has had a similar procedure done, particularly lesionectomies, and if they went alright or if there were any side-effects?

Thanks,

Comments

I've never had the term "lesionectomy" uttered in connection with my situation but I did have right-side surgery 10 years ago and have detailed my experiences...
