Left Temporal Lobe Resection vs. Corpus Callosotomy

Mon, 07/31/2017 - 11:34
Has anyone had either of these surgeries? My son, 25 y/o has had intractable seizures since he was 11 after surviving viral encephalitis. Has had VNS since 12 which helped tremendously, and takes a cocktail of multiple seizure meds. Surgery is now an option - he has already had WADA test and all the other preliminary tests. Have consult with neurosurgeon soon, and would really appreciate any info from others who have had either of these procedures so we know what to ask the surgeon to help us decide if this is the right avenue. We've heard about transcranial device too, not sure if we should do this first, or surgery. He's an avid Xbox player - it has become his entire world since he can't drive, etc., and would hate for the surgery to take away the one thing that he says makes him feel like a "normal" person. If you've gone through this please please comment. Thank you.

I understand his feelings. I

I understand his feelings. I've had epilepsy since I was 5 now 46. I almost did the surgery when I was 17, just by luck my medication started working.Best I can say is don't let it interfere with your life. I know there are somethings you can't do. I was refused from the military when I was 20, turned down a job as a peace officer and lost my drivers license when I was 39. Yet I still managed to have two sons (married and divorced lol), purchase my own home, managed a store for 20 years and I now work as a youth care worker. I know this is off the topic of what you asked. But I wanted to let him know don't ever let go of hope.

I would try temporal

I would try temporal resection first rather than corpus callostomy. I'm not a doctor of course, but I know about both procedures. I had a right temporal lobe resection done. Sadly I'm still having seizures but they're way less severe. I'm now a candidate for the transcranial device that I will be getting implanted here at the end of this year. May God bless you both <3
