Brain Surgery Done - Now What?

Sat, 04/23/2011 - 16:21

Well...Surgery on my front, left temporal lobe is NOW COMPLETE!  Approx. 4 inches was removed.  It has been a little over 4 weeks and I am seizure free thus far!  I realize this could change, but I thank God for the results.  My current healing process is as follows...still very tired.  I feel better now than I did right after the surgery.  I had surgery on a Thursday and went home on Saturday morning!  It's amazing how quick the surgery was completed - approx 4.5hrs.  I have had no negative changes in my brain (speech, etc.) that I can notice as of yet (I am still very cautious).  Again, this is a blessing and I am very thankful/happy to have this.  So, my questions are these...who has had this surgery and what is (are) his/her healing results afterwards - i.e., How long were you tired? Were there any other major side effects?  I was told the healing process could take up to 1 yr, but I also spoke with a lady who said her recovery lasted approx 1 month and she was back to driving, etc.  I know it will vary from person to person, so I'm just trying to get an idea(s).  I really don't want to push myself, but I also don't want to sleep all day.  I'm sorry this message has been so scattered, but I write as my brain asks!  =0)  Thanks for any/all replies!  God bless, Peyton

Hi - Congrats on being seizure free - may it last forever! My 3 1/2 yo son had surgery last year and has been seizure free for 14 months - it took about ten days after surgey that I thought he was back to normal (running around etc) but since he was so young its hard to know how he "felt". If you try to do a little more activity everyday you should be back to "normal" in a couple of weeks. If you push yourself too much - your body will probably let you know.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the kind reply.  I'm so glad your son is doing well!  Of course, I know you're more glad than I am! =0)  I cannot imagine what the experience was like, especially for a child.  I'm sure you learned a lot of patience.  As for exercise, I am walking a couple of times per week - it all depends on how I feel.  I hope to start running again by the end of May, but I will not push it.  And you are correct re: my body. It tells me how I feel.  The main thing is that I listen to it.  This is often hard for me, as I normally push it a lot.  Thanks again for your reply, and mainly, congrats with your son!!!!!

Its refreshing to read some positive info following this surgery.

My 20 yr old son was a passenger in a MVA in 08 requiring emergency brain surgery - 2 more the same year. End results - he is sound of mind and body however disabled due to seizures. Started bi-yearly and now some are monthly+... Going in for a week long study this Friday to see where the seizures originate so they can advise on surgery. I am SCARED to death!! I know he see's it as either, try to fix this issue or be prepared to be homebound due to seizures but we almost lost him once - coma for a month.. I just cant imagine this surgery but I have a feeling if its feasible according to his DR's, he'll opt to do it...
