Advice on right temporal lobe surgery

Wed, 10/26/2016 - 03:59
Hi there, Just looking for some advice and people's experiences with right temporal lobe surgery. Specifically if it stopped seizures completely and if medication was no longer necessary :-) I am considering it as an option as none of my medications have worked so far. I am at the stage where I am about to go for the video EEG to see if I am definitely eligible for surgery. So far my doctor thinks I am though. I can't drive also which is a big issue for me. Here's a bit about me: I am 27 years old. I'm currently on 1500mg keppra twice a day, 200mg lamictal twice a day and also also 200mg vimpat twice a day and still not controlled. My neurologist recently suggested surgery. I was not at all open to it at the time but now I'm starting to think I might be - especially since I haven't found a drug yet that has worked. I average seizures once daily - once monthly. They are normally either simple or complex partials. I'm very lucky it isn't worse but at the same time it could be so much better :) I have auras more often though. Anyways, I want to hear your stories with surgery! Whether successful or not, good or bad and whether you are still on medication after the surgery. My aim is no seizures, no auras and driving again! Also to go medication free in so I can start a healthier life! Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Hello, I've had epilepsy

Hello, I've had epilepsy since I was 10 and a half years old. I regret having my right temporal lobectemy surgery done when I was 13 in the year 1998. I had it done by one of the top 5 Nuerosurgeons in the U.S. but the outcome wasn't good. He screwed up cause they were suppose to stop me from having seizures but what happened was they completely erased my memory instead. I woke up from the surgery not knowing a word of English, who I was, where I was, not knowing who my friends and family members standing next to me were and much more. It took 6 years for me to learn just my name and a few words of English back cause I kept on having seizures after the surgery and still have them up til today but not grand mals anymore, just abscence seizures now mostly. I'm sure the surgery is a lot more updated than it was back in 98 when I had it done. Cause of them screwing up my brain every kid in high school bullied me and even the teachers hated me and yelled at me for having a seizure in their class even though I was still trying to learn everything back again. It was the closest things to being reborn again at the age of 13 but with seizures and just like babies when they are born, don't know anything. Slowly over the years most of it came back to me. But my brain will never be %100 anymore.

Hi Donald, that sucks!!! :( I agree with the pain. I'm actually 6 weeks into my recovery right now. Can I just ask - how severe and often were your seizures before the first surgery? I see your post was from 26 days ago, so how are you going after your laser ablation operation?
