What to expect.. New to this..

Sat, 09/06/2014 - 20:48

Hi.. I am hoping someone can tell me what to expect as we try to get my daughter's seizures under control- she's 3 and started having complex partial seizures after a head injury.. A very mild head injury actually. She has been on the same meds since we got released from the hospital a month ago and her seizures have decreased from 10-12 a day to 3 or 4 a day.. The neurologist added a new medicine to go with the phenobarbital and her seizures got worse and we had to go back to the hospital.. Now I don't trust him and I'm scared to give her anything besides the phenobarbital.. Is controlling the seizures supposed to be a trial and error sort of thing? All of this is new to me and I'm scared..

Thank you both for replying and prayers.. It makes me feel a little better to hear this is to be expected.. I didn't realize when all of this started how hard this will be. Sarah, what other types of intervention are you talking about?

There is a lot of trial and error. A medication that works for one person may not for the next. The same with dosages. Each persons body is different. Also understand that medications are being prescribed by her neurologist and the medications perscribed are being used by other patients he has in the same medications and those patients are getting results. I was on a name brand medication which cost me 985.00 a month. I discussed the issue with Doc because a generic had come out. I was his test patient for that medications generic. The generic works fine (from 5 differenr makers). As your daughter grows keep an eye out since weight is also what dosages are set on. When I was in my early teens I had my dosages changed 4-6 times in less then a year.I grew a lot. Changing from 4'8" 85lbs to 5"6" 135lbs. Most of that growth was between april and aug since we had bought new jeans that were 3 inches to long and we had to buy new ones since the older ones were ankle waders. As for adding another medication to one she is using. That happens all the time. I started taking 2 meds. Changed to 3 then back to 2. I Ihave used 4 medications at one time. Doc added vimpat to my keppra and by doing that the number of seizures I was having has been reduced along with the time in those seizures. I do hope her neurologist gets her medications set and she gets seizure free Joe
