VNS surgery Monday for 9 year old boy

Fri, 08/03/2007 - 12:10
My son has generalized seizure disorder. Absence seizures are what we have been unable to stop with medication. He has failed: Zarontin, Lamictal and topamax. Currently taking depakote 1250 mg a day. Please see his website for more details: http://home.columbus.rr.com/dolfanshaven/epilepsy.htm My question is has anyone gained relief from VNS of absence seizures? Any advice, warnings and or suggestions on what to take to hospital for surgery greatly appreciated. Amy

My son's seizures are all generalized. His first VNS implanting was 5 years ago, he is now 10 years old. My son failed 10 meds at the implanting and he went from 100's of seizures a day to 0 for 182 days.... now he is having up to 15 a day. The 2nd VNS was implanted almost 2 years ago as the first one's battery went dead. And the 182 days stopped when the now ex neuro failed us and decided that my son was cured because we were on medicaid. My son has a wonderful Epi now, and the VNS is stopping about 75% of my son's seizures without the use of the magnet. Advice???... keep asking questions, Call Cyberonics and ask to speak to a parent that has been through what you are going through right now. Talk to the neuro and see what they say, and suggest. email me if you would like.. missyat2001@yahoo.com Missy
