Twitches , jerks and head shakes in sleep.

Hey all, first I will start by telling you a little about my son. He is 18 months old he was born 1 month premature at 4.5 lbs.due to low amniotic fluid. He has knot on his head and bruises. I was told this was because of the low fluid. He also Had issues with keeping his temperature up after he was born, so we ended up going back and fourth to the hospital. However, I heard that that can be normal with premature babies. Well since he was about 10 months he has twitched and jerked in his sleep. Every single night and every nap. His feet will twitch and jerk , then his hands, his legs and sometimes his head. It seems like it goes in a rhythm. the doctor just said it is normal and we thought he would outgrow it. Well, I have five boys and what he is doing just doesn't seem "normal". Maybe not life threatening but not normal. None of my other boys have done this. He is now 18 months and doesn't seem to be outgrowing it.  he does it all night. Even in the car seat when he falls asleep. The entire time.  I recorded him in the car seat while sleeping two days ago, his body twitched so much, it started in his toes and went up to his arms and shoulders and his head twitced 3 times side to side really fast. I am just wondering if any one has any advice or any experience with their children doing this. Do you think it could have been some type of seizure in his sleep? Should I press for an EEG or something? Thanks!

you should listen to your gut

you should listen to your gut, you know something is off and he should be checked out by someone who listens. I'd push for a referral to a neurologist and at least an EEG long enough to include sleep - might consider checking for sleep breathing issues or other sleep problems if a pediatric specialist thinks it's something other than seizures.

you should have him checked

you should have him checked out. Especially if you have the recording. As Amy Jo posted a pediatric specialist. The EEG should be done and yes with sleep. I had 20-25 EEG's that all came back normal. It one they saw abnormalities in was one in which I fell asleep in.

My son is older but during

My son is older but during EEG doctor said he was having mini seizures in his sleep on top of the grand Mal seizures you definitely can't miss. Pediatric neurologist ordered the EEG and it would definitely show if these are what your little one is having. It's a pain and they are monitoring for 24-72 hours but it's definitely worth the peace of mind either way. Best wishes.
