Trileptal and trouble sleeping?

Thu, 08/09/2007 - 01:53
I don't know if I am far off with this idea, but my daugther Kaitlyn (2) started taking Trileptal on Saturday and she has been having the hardest times falling asleep lately. Tonight it took 2 1/2 hrs to get her to go to sleep. It was full of screaming kicking and crying. And when it was all over with I felt like I was going to cry. It was horrible. It was like she was terrified to go to sleep or something. She threw fits all nap time today so she only got about 30 minutes of a nap, so I figured that she would be exhausted and ready for bed... nah... nope... not happening!! She threw a fit until I finally had to climb into her bed (a little tiny toddler bed with a million blankets and stuffed animals, it was great) and then she finally calmed down after about 20 minutes of crying and whining still. Is it possible at all for it to be from the medication? Or the seizures? Or it's just a phase of a 2 year old? Or all of the above? Personal experiences? I am by no means thinking that any of you are able to provide me with medical advice... just personal experiences with the medication. I am of course going to be calling the doctor tomorrow but I just wanted to get some other peoples opinions. Thanks!!

Sylvia, Thanks for the response. I hope that you are feeling well this evening. Kaitlyn has been in a toddler bed for months now, I can't even remember how long and she has always done great. All of the sudden we start this medicine and she woke up the other night at midnight and didn't go back to bed until 6 am and now 2 nights in a row we can't get her to sleep at night. I had to lay in bed with her last night and tonight until she fell asleep to get her to go to sleep. It's almost like she is scared to go to sleep on her own. I don't know. I noticed alot of twitching when she was falling asleep tonight, so maybe she has been having more seizures while falling asleep and she is scared. I don't know. Probably a long shot but it seems like it's atleast a little possible.... Thank you for taking time to answer me!! I have been thinking about you. Take care and rest easy. Emily

It could be a combination of all of the above. When my daughter was two she started having seizures. She wouldnt sleep in her bed.Which was fine by me. I had to let her fall asleep in my bed and then move her to her bed.Sometime in the middle of the night she would find her way back into my room.Around the age of three I was finally able to get her to fall asleep in her own bed. Trileptal caused my daughter to be tired and cranky but only the first couple of weeks.
